But they weren’t together. Not anymore. He had to remember that. He had to respect that this all looked very different for Thea than it did for him.

According to her, she hadn’t seen or heard from him in nearly twenty years. Now he was staying in her house. It was generous of her to put him up and to help him with his memory loss, but he couldn’t expect this to be anything more than that.

It didn’t matter that it still felt like more than that. It didn’t matter that his last memory was of being in love with her. She didn’t feel the same. She couldn’t.

He pulled his hand away and got to his feet. “I think I’ll go lie down for a while,” he said. “Is that okay?”

“Of course it is,” she said. “Can I get you anything?”

“No, I’m fine,” he assured her. “I just need to rest and gather my thoughts.”

She nodded. “I’ll be around,” she said. “I don’t have anything else to do today, so I’ll just be out here watching TV. You can feel free to join me if you want.”

“Thea?”

“Yeah?”

“Thank you for doing this.”

She smiled. “You’re making progress, Rob,” she said. “The fact that you accessed new memories today is a great sign. You’re going to get it all back. I’m confident.”

Rob nodded. “I hope you’re right.”

If I could just remember the past seventeen years, maybe I wouldn’t be aching for Thea like this. Maybe I’d be able to let it go.
