Oh, shit. Fucking twins.
“Ha, ha we are having twins, Sutton. Fucking twins.” I’m shaking her hand like we’ve won the lottery.
“Mr. McGarry please. Can you calm down and let me finish?”
Fuck, he’s stern. Can’t I be happy for a minute? He moves the mouse again and says, “There is a third heartbeat.”
“What? What are you saying? Our baby has three hearts? I thought you were telling me we were having twins. What the fuck, man? Stop talking in riddles.”
Sutton is so serene and calm. Little tears escape from the corners of her eyes as she stares at the screen. “If I’m not mistaken, and please correct me, Doctor Kumar, if I’m wrong, but we are having triplets, West. Am I right?” she asks the doctor.
Doctor Kumar nods. His eyes are now firmly fixed on me. “And, from my scan, they look healthy and the right size. We will need to see you every two weeks to ensure they are growing correctly and that they are getting what they need. I’ll leave you with Gloria to sort everything else out.” He’s up and gone, and so is Doctor Jameson.
An hour ago, one baby had me by the balls but triplets?
Fuck!
Chapter 54
Sutton
Mybigstrongmancrumbled before my eyes when he thought there was something wrong with me and then with the baby. This only fires my love for him more. I could see the pain in his eyes, in his body language, and the little blip of doubt that happened just before the scan is all forgotten. I ask Gloria to go and tell the family we were all okay and we would be out shortly. We just needed a minute to catch our breath.
West has all three pictures in his hands and is looking at them with disbelief. The word 'triplets' keeps coming from his lips. As if something awakens him, he looks up. Scanning my face, he leans forward, places a strong hand on my tummy, and leans into my lips.
“I love you, Sutton Smith.” He kisses me softly, and then harder.
When we break, I breathe, “I love you too, West McGarry.”
I can’t begin to explain how much I love this man. I’ve turned his world completely upside down and spun it around, and he still fell in love with me. He doesn’t care about my background or history. He doesn’t care that I don’t want to wear designer clothes and drive fancy cars. But he does care about me.
We walk down the corridor hand in hand. The first to notice something is North.
“What the fuck have you done to your eye?” He laughs.
“He fainted,” I announce proudly with a real evil smirk. I wink at North as he collapses back into his chair.
“Fucking fainted. You pussy,” North shouts a little too loud before Liz smacks him right across the back of his head.
“Enough,” she bites. Shit, that woman can be scary.
“Sorry, Mum,” North whispers.
She nods and points to the chairs. “Come on, then. Tell us. What’s wrong? And why did West faint? He’s not scared of blood or anything.”
We sit at the big table, and West puts the three pictures on the table in front of his mum and my dad.
“You’re pregnant?” she asks, and we both nod together. We know they haven’t worked out the significance of the three different pictures yet. That will come.
North takes them all and starts to study them. “I think I’ll have a copy of this one. It’s the clearest of them all.”
I laugh when West pipes up. “Picking favourites already, North? That’s not being a good uncle.”
“What do you mean favourites?” South chirps in, surprising us all.
“Yeah, I don’t get it. They are only pictures of the baby. Why would picking one picture be an issue?” East asks.
I have to admit this is quite fun. Liz takes the pictures and studies them. Then, her eyes meet mine and then Wests before they hop back to mine. “It’s not one baby though, is it?” she asks, smiling widely. We both shake our heads.
