She stood, gave Sean a little strip tease, baring herself a bit at a time, turning so he couldn’t see, then taunting him with glimpses of the real estate between her thighs.

Okay, so they were both a little tipsy.

“Tease.” He stood, scooped her into his arms, and carried her to the bed.

And there, he made the world go away, pleasure carrying them both to the stars.

June 25

The flightback to Kodiak on Sunday afternoon went without a hitch. They loaded their gear into Sean’s vehicle and headed toward Natasha’s to pick up Maverick.

“I can’t wait to see my boy.”

“Me, too.”

Eden fished her phone out of her backpack to let Natasha know they’d landed and were on their way. But the moment she turned on her phone, it lit up with messages from her sisters and her mother, all of them saying the same thing.

Big news. We’re all at Baba’s.

Come to Baba’s.

When you land, we’ll be at Baba’s with Mavie.

“Oh, God.” A knot of dread settled in her stomach.

“Is something wrong?”

“I think so. We need to go to my Baba’s house.” She replied in a group text to tell everyone that they were on their way, then gave Sean directions. “I hope she’s okay.”

“So do I.” Sean glanced over at her, took her hand, eyes hidden behind his aviators. “I’ve wanted to meet her for a while now.”

Eden told herself that her grandmother had lived a long and happy life. Even so, she wasn’t ready to say goodbye. But at Baba’s age, anything might happen. She might fall and break a hip, have a stroke, or just pass away in her sleep.

They turned the corner, and Eden saw a dozen cars she recognized parked along the road. “It looks like everyone’s here.”

The knot of dread grew heavier.

She climbed out, met Sean at the rear of the vehicle, the two of them walking toward her grandmother’s home, holding hands. “My grandfather built this place. It started as a one-room cabin, but he expanded it as their family grew. There’s a garden out back with an orchard, though it’s pretty overgrown these days.”

The door opened, and Natasha stepped out, holding Maverick by the hand. She pointed to Eden. “Who’s that, Maverick?”

Maverick’s face lit up. “Mommy!”

Natasha let go of his hand, and Maverick dashed toward them.

Eden scooped him up, hugged him tight. “I’m so happy to see you, Maverick. Did you have a fun time with Auntie Tasha, Summer, and Willow?”

Maverick nodded, a shy smile on his face.

Sean tousled Maverick’s hair. “Hey, buddy.”

They walked inside, Eden hit with a rush of relief when she saw her grandmother sitting in her recliner. Her mother was there, too, with Auntie Evelyn, who was crying. Then she saw him—Agent Chase Santee.

He stood, greeted her and Sean with a nod. “Eden. McKenna.”

What was he doing here?
