So was I, but not completely. I was worried about Willie too now that George had put it in my head. I wanted to bethe onefor him, but what if I wasn’t? Would I step aside and let him find his true love, or would I marry him anyway if I had the chance?
I needed to throw myself into this newly romantic relationship with gusto, didn’t I?
Lucas’s words echoed in my mind.I want you. Every last ounce of you down to the bottom of your soul. Your heart, your mind, your beauty, your flaws. All of it. I want you to give me everything. No holding back.
Instead of leaning into Willie, instead of giving him my full attention as I’d intended and as he deserved, I looked out the window and exclaimed at the holiday lights as if I was a tourist. Even though I made attempts to tear myself from Lucas’s memory, his essence intruded on every nuance of the evening. Even as I stared into Willie’s eyes as we snuggled in the back of the limo at the end of the night, my mind compared his body, his kiss, his voice, his everything to Lucas.
Damn, this isn’t fair. Not to anyone.
“I wish we could spend the night together and all day tomorrow,” Willie said, “but I have work in the morning. I love spending time with you, Lissy. You’re so beautiful and smart. I love making you laugh.”
“I love your sense of humor. You’re so much fun.” It was true. Will was funny and fun and easy to be with. The notion buoyed me. Wasn’t that what good, lasting relationships were about?
His smile felt like a reward for good behavior. He said, “Then you’ll be my special midnight kiss on New Year’s Eve?”
I nodded, my stomach swirled, my world swirled. I told myself this was good. It meant I was excited. It meant things were on track.Iwas on track, back to myself again.
But much later that night, as I lay awake in the bed that I’d shared with Lucas, I wondered again for the zillionth time since I’d met him a week ago, who the hell I really was.
Who the hell Lucas really was.
