“The last thing I want to do is tell my friends I’m homeless.”

It was as if I’d shocked his heart. His face froze and he stopped breathing for a moment.

“Lucas?”

“Okay.”

Then when I was more puzzled than I had ever been since ninth grade geometry—because I’d flapped the previously unflappable Lucas-the-cool-art-student—he pulled me in for a full-frontal, all-the-parts-touching, heart-throbbing hug. Though it wasn’t a hug of passion, or wasn’t meant to be, I felt a sizzle under the warmth of comfort and caring.

Light kisses trailed from my hair down to my cheek and when I thought he’d kiss my mouth, wanted and anticipated the touch of those lips of his on mine, we were interrupted. Naturally, because there we were in the middle of a now crowded party putting on this massive public display of affection. So of course someone was bound to notice.

That someone was Margo.

“There you are, Lissy! And this must be Lucas.”
