“He’s right. There’s too much at stake with Nicky to complicate matters with any kind of relationship beyond being civil.”

“You can do better than that,” she says, giving me that knowing look. I don’t fool her for a second.

On a sigh, I say, “Maybe in the future. Maybe I should, but I haven’t given up on him.” Determination to fight for him this time rears up. My stomach dips and tumbles. “The only question is whether or not he’s given up on me.”

She nods. “If I were a betting woman, I’d take odds that you two are together by Christmas.”

I laugh, but it doesn’t hide my secret delight at the notion. I can’t let myself slip into being that silly girl again. If ever there was a time to keep a level head, this is it.

“Not sure what you mean bytogether, but that would be one smashing Christmas gift under my tree.” We both laugh, both knowing what she means by together.

“Seriously though, Nicky is the priority. I want her to have her father.” I also want with all my heart for Logan to finally have his daughter. The one I deprived him of for six long years.
