“Yeah. All they wanted me to do was sell my soul, betray my friends, lie, and steal. This job is much cleaner, believe me.” As long as I overlook the leers. As long as the leering doesn’t bring to mind the image of my old nemesis, because the second one of the creeps reminds me of the Olympic volleyball team assistant coach, I’m guaranteed a tough night’s sleep. But I don’t share that crap because . . . it’s crap. In the past.

“How’s Ryan?” I can’t help myself. What I really want to ask is if she’s mentioned to him that I work here and whether he has plans to come in. That’s how bad I want to see him, just to look at him. He doesn’t even have to talk to me and I’ll be happy. I’m the definition of pathetic and from the look on Maggie’s face, she knows it.

“He’s his usual self. I suppose. Not that I’ve seen him. Levi says he’s busy—hockey and sleep. He’s scaled back on going out.”

I don’t tell her I know this because in spite of everything, I’ve been watching BTSB every night. The new Gossip Girl is cute and clueless, but the fans keep sending her material, and she keeps reporting it.

“I haven’t seen any new commercials.”

“No. Levi says he’s trying to reestablish his promotional goals. Whatever the fuck that means.” I don’t tell her I already knew this too.

Pink says, “It means he’s ditching his old sponsors in favor of new ones with a different . . . product line. It looks like he’s trying to rehab his image.”

“What do you know? You’re an accountant?” Maggs says.

“I have it from my boss’s brother who works at an ad agency that he’s looking for clean-cut commercials like apple pie and kittens.”

We look at her.

“You’re a font of information,” I say, and she grins.

“I’d say more, but I’m not at liberty.”

“Of course not. You’re the vault of secrets,” I say.But she has nothing on me, does she?
