Chapter 23
Stretching languidly beneath the blankets, Selene slowly stirred. Her muscles ached in all the right places as the memory of the night before flooded her mind. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d had such a wild night. One thing was for sure, she’d never been so sated in her entire life.
I could certainly get used to sex like that, she thought.
Rolling onto her side, she reached across the bed for Arun, but all she felt was cold bed sheets. Selene’s eyes opened as she looked to where Arun had been when she fell asleep.
Sitting up, she looked around the room for him, but he wasn’t anywhere to be seen. The door to the other room was closed, so she couldn’t see if he was in there. But even without being able to see, she had a feeling he wasn’t in there, either.
Disappointment hit her hard and fast at the realisation he’d left the bed while she’d slept. After all his promises to help her locate the spell, he’d upped and left at the first opportunity.
Maybe it was for the best. After all, he would be leaving the realm soon, anyway. So, it was better if she didn’t get too attached to him.
You might be leaving, as well, her subconscious reminded her.Oh, just shut up!
She was in no mood to think about that. She couldn’t, not now. She needed to concentrate on locating the spell, and she needed to find it sooner rather than later.
The bad feeling in her gut was getting worse. She was running out of time. She didn’t know how she knew it; she just did.
Selene was about to climb out of bed and dress when she heard someone enter the bunker. She assumed it was Arun, so she called out to let him know she was just getting up and would be out in a minute, but before she could move off the bed, the door was thrown open and several males rushed into the room. Every single one of them was a Fae, but none of them was Arun.
“Get out!” she shouted, but they ignored her.
They crowded around the bed while two held back by the door, blocking her only escape.
“What do you want?” she demanded.
But none of them spoke. They remained silence as they stood guard around the bed. The bad feeling in her gut intensified to the point she felt physically sick. That’s when she caught sight of him. The one Fae she had hoped to never see again.
He locked eyes with her and walked into the room as if he owned the place. The two guards stationed at the door, bowed their heads as he passed them. Selene would rather slit her own throat than bow to that monster.
“You,” she sneered. “I should have known these arseholes were with you.”
“Now, now,” he said as he closed in on the bed. “Is that any way to speak to your master?”
“You’re not my master,” she growled.
“I beg to differ,” he said. “I paid good money for you, so you belong to me.”
“I don’t care how much money you paid,” she said. “I don’t belong to you, or anyone else, for that matter.”
“I’m not going to argue with you about this,” he said. “Get dressed. You’ve been gone for long enough. It’s time to go home.”
“I’m not going anywhere with you!”
He rubbed the bridge of his nose. “You know how this goes, Selene. We’ve been through this already, haven’t we?” He looked up at her expectantly. When she still didn’t answer, he said. “We can either do this the easy way, or the hard way. Pick and do it quickly, or I’ll be forced to do it for you.”
“I amnotgoing anywhere with you,” she repeated.
“Fine, the hard way it is, then.”
He snapped his fingers and two guards leapt into action. They reached across the bed, grabbing for her. Selene did her best to fight them off, but it was a losing battle, and she knew it.
“No!” she screamed when they finally got hold of her. “Let go of me!”
But they didn’t. If anything, their grip tightened as they dragged her by the ankles across the bed. They forced her onto her feet and gripped her arms before turning her to facehim.
“Be a good girl and make this easy on yourself,” he told her.
Selene replied by spitting in his face. He slowly wiped away her saliva before backhanding her across the face. Her face snapped to the side as pain exploded inside her head from the impact.
He grabbed her chin and forced her to look up at him. “Don’t ever do that again.”
He released her just as quickly as he’d grabbed her and nodded to one of the guards behind her. A moment later, she felt a small sharp pain in the side of her neck. She knew instantly what he’d done. He had injected her with a strong sedative. Last time he had done it, she had been out cold for days.
She could already feel the drug taking effect. Her limbs were starting to go numb and a thick fog had begun to cloud her mind.
“You bastard,” she managed to slur, and then everything went black.
