He did make a mighty fine doctor. If only he could be shirtless next time, she might not mind the kicking so much.

Whatever he’d used on her wounds had worked wonders. In less than a day, the bruises were nearly gone, and the cuts had healed completely.

“I don’t think you need to worry about that,” he said.

Selene frowned at him. “About what?”

“The spell,” he said. “I can’t see it working on you the same way as the rest of us.”

“You can’t say that,” she said. “For all we know, it could kick out everyone who isn’tfullyHuman. That includes me.”

“There are bound to be other halflings,” he said. “They might not be like you, but there are bound to be more.”

It had occurred to her that she might not be the only halfling, but she hadn’t come across any.

“Your point being?”

“Whatever happens to you, is bound to happen to them.”

Selene took a deep breath and released it. “I know, but I can’t exactly go around and warn them all about whatmighthappen. We don’t have the time to look for them, and even if we did, I don’t have a clue where we would even start. It could be more difficult finding them than the spell.”

“I know,” he agreed. “After so many years, it’s quite possible that there are more halflings than full Humans.”

“That wouldn’t surprise me,” she said. “Your kind, for instance, aren’t exactly known for keeping their dicks in their pants.”

As soon as the last word left her mouth, she regretted it. She wanted to kick her own arse for letting that bit of information slip.

Way to go, moron! Why don’t you tell him all your secrets while you’re at it?

Closing her eyes, she took a deep, calming breath and counted to ten. When she opened her eyes again, Arun stood in front of her glaring at her. She hadn’t even realised they had stopped walking until then.

Waves of anger washed off him. He was almost shaking with rage. She could see it in the way he held himself. As if the slightest thing would set him off. But she didn’t think he was angry with her. No, it seemed to be aimed at the people who hurt her. Which he confirmed a heartbeat later.

“Who forced them self on you?” he demanded.

Selene’s eyebrows shot up in surprise at both his demand, and her body’s reaction to it. Was it wrong that she found him even more attractive when he was angry? Was she sick?

I must be,she mused.Sick in the head, that is.

She was both disturbed and aroused at the same time. It was a weird combination, to say the least.

“Tell me.” He growled when she didn’t reply straight away.

“That would be a long list, pudding,” she said, patting him on the chest.

She couldn’t help but sneak in a little stroke while her hand was there, either. If he noticed, he didn’t say anything.

“We don’t have the time to stand around while I list them all for you,” she said, hoping he would drop it. When it didn’t look like he was going to, she added. “Plus, I don’t actually know any of their names. Sorry, I didn’t bother asking at the time.”

“Tell me what they look like, then,” he demanded.

“Seriously?” she frowned. “Don’t you think we have enough to deal with already?”

Arun was silent for a moment. When he spoke, it was a short, sharp ‘fine’ before he turned around and continued walking.

Selene shook her head. He just kept surprising her. She wondered what he would do or say next to surprise her.
