No doors or windows were open, the room was completely sealed, not to mention, she was in a bunker underground, but that didn’t stop the wind from picking up around her. It played with the loose strands of her hair and tugged on her clothing, as if demanding her attention, but she ignored it and continued chanting.

“Elements, I call to thee. Clear the Earth, Part the Sea. Show me what I cannot see. As the Wind blows, and the Fire’s glow, show me where I have to go.”

By the time she finished reciting the words, objects were beginning to fly around the room. Loose bits of paper were the first to start flying around the room, and then slightly heavier objects joined in. Thankfully, all the furniture remained in place.

Selene didn’t flinch. No matter what happened around her, nothing would enter the protective circle, not even a piece of paper. Only the wind could reach her while she was inside it.

She repeated the chant three times, but other than the wind continually picking up speed and throwing larger and larger items around the room, absolutely nothing happened. She was no closer to making the spell work than she had been when she first attempted it.

Selene let her hands fall to her lap in defeat. As the wind died down, so did her hopes of finding the book.

“No!” she snapped at herself. “I’m not giving up.”

Eventually, she was going to find it. She just needed to keep going.

Unfortunately, she would have to try it again tomorrow because the summoning spell had taken more out of her than she thought. For something that ultimately didn’t work, it drained a hell of a lot of energy.

She climbed to her feet. With unsteady legs, she worked her way anticlockwise, snuffing out the candles. As she did so, she chanted the spell that would close the circle.

“And now it is done with the wake of the sun. Inhale the power of this magical hour. With the bell sound, the magic is bound. As the last candle glows, the time is now for the circle to close.”

Selene snuffed out the last candle and then slumped on the floor. She closed her eyes as she rubbed at her temples.

“Well, that was a complete waste of time.”

All the planning and preparation she had put into the spell, and it still didn’t work. She was close to giving up. The only thing that spurred her on was the thought of ridding the world of monsters. Of eliminating all the senseless death and destruction that had rained down on Humans for hundreds of years.

She wouldn’t stop until the world was free from Vampires, Demons, Shapeshifters, Skinwalkers, Ogres, Trolls, and every other creature that meant to harm the Human race.

Selene just hoped she didn’t end up banish herself in the process, which was a possibility. Unfortunately, because she wasn’t fully Human, she could easily end up banishing herself from the realm, as well.

She didn’t have a clue where she would end up because she didn’t know where her father was from. Her mother was from the Human realm, but that connection might not be enough to keep her there.

Hopefully, once she found the blasted spell, she would have a better idea of what might happen. Until then, she couldn’t rule anything out.

Selene didn’t want to think about the possibility of not finding out until the spell was completed. By that time, it would be too late for her to back out. Not that she would. Too much rested on her finding and casting the spell. If she didn’t succeed, the Human race would come to an end.

So, the fate of the Human race, rested in her hands.

“We’re all fucked.”
