Chapter 11
As much as she wanted to be pissed off with Arun for saying that Humans had brought it all on themselves, she couldn’t because he’d only been speaking the truth. Humans were to blame for the extinction of so many plants and animals. They caused so many problems in the realm, it was no wonder no one had stepped in to stop them sooner.
If she had been in his position all those years ago, she would have probably done the same thing. But Humans were different now. They didn’t hunt for sport like they used to, and they don’t cut down millions of acres of woodlands and forests to build houses or to use as farmland.
Instead, they had learnt to live alongside nature, treating it with the love and respect it deserved.
The crimes of the past, should not be put on the shoulders of future generations.
Selene knew it seemed like she was doing exactly that with Arun, but it was different. She hadn’t been involved with the atrocities of the past, and she hadn’t hurt anyone who hadn’t tried to hurt her first, or those who intended to harm her.
Could Arun say the same? Probably not, but it didn’t stop her from feeling like a hypocrite.
“Where are we going?” Arun asked.
“You don’t need to know.”
“I only ask because we seem to be going around in circles.”
Selene sighed when she realised, he was right. They had gone around in one massive circle and was now heading back towards the bunker.
“Shit.”
“I take it you didn’t plan on returning to the underground compound?”
Selene rolled her eyes. “No shit, Sherlock.”
“If you tell me what you’re trying to do, I can help you.” He held his hands up when she glared at him. “I give you my word, I mean you no harm. I just want to help you.”
Selene would love to take him up on the offer, but she couldn’t. The problem was, once he found out what she was trying to do, he could easily change his mind. If that happened, then what? It wasn’t like she could protect herself against him.
But what if he still wants to help?
As much as she might want the help, could she run the risk? But then again, if she turned down the offer, would she be shooting herself in the foot?
As he had pointed out, there would be others coming after her. Especially once word got around about what she was planning on doing. If she wasn’t powerful enough to take down someone like Arun, then she would be less than useless against more of his kind, which she already knew from past experience.
There was no doubt in Selene’s mind that it wouldn’t only be the fae coming after her. Every species in the realm, except for Humans, would be gunning for her before too long. So, could she really turn down his offer?
Better the devil you know, and all that.
Not that she actually knew him, but he was all she had.
“Fine, I’ll tell you.” She sighed. “But not here. Not out in the open.”
If she had to tell him, then she wanted to make sure nobody could over hear them.
“I wouldn’t recommend going back to your underground compound…”
“Bunker,” she interrupted.
“Fine, the bunker,” he conceded. “Do you have another safe place where we can go?”
“Nope,” she grimaced. “You invaded my only safe place.”
Desire flared in his eyes at her words. Selene instantly blushed as the realisation of what she’d said registered in her mind.
Way to embarrass yourself in front of a sexy stranger!
