Chapter 10

Selene may not have wanted to keep him all to herself, but Arun certainly wanted to keep her to himself. He was glad he hadn’t said anything to Taredd and Dain about her.

They would have insisted on going with him. As much as he appreciated their company, he was more than happy to have some alone time with Selene. Which he wouldn’t have if they had gone with him.

Selene.

Her name rolled around in his mind like a delicious wine. It suited her. Just like the Greek Goddess of the moon she was named after, she shone brightly in the darkness, and comforted those who walked alongside her.

Without even knowing it, she emanated peace. Even with her fiery attitude… or maybe because of it… he wanted to get closer to her, to know her better. Like a moth to a flame, he felt drawn to her.

It started the moment he first heard her in his mind. It was only a small at first, like a niggling in the back of his mind, but it quickly grew.

Arun stupidly thought the strange feelings he felt towards her would disappear once he met her, but if anything, they had intensified.

“I’m sure your friends are missing your sparkling personality,” she said sarcastically. “So, why don’t you just run off and find them? As I’ve said, I don’t need any help, but thanks anyway.”

Why wouldn’t she tell him what she was doing? What was she hiding?

The more she avoided telling him what she was doing, the more determined he was to find out. Whatever she was hiding, it was going to be her undoing if she wasn’t careful.

“They will be fine without me,” he assured her. “Plus, if they need me, they’ll be able to find me easily enough.”

She looked adorable when she cocked her head and frowned at him. “What do you mean? How easily?”

“One of my friends is a Shapeshifter, he can…”

“Yeah, I know what his kind can do,” she interrupted.

He didn’t need to see the look of hatred on her face as she spoke, he could hear it in the tone of her voice.

As much as he wanted to defend Dain and his kind, he couldn’t. They, along with all the other species… himself included… had made life hell for Humans.

He knew Selene wasn’t Human, but only because he’d felt her power, her magic. If he hadn’t been looking for her or felt her magic, he would have killed her without a second thought. So, he understood why others had tried in the past.

I’d like to see them try now!

Just the thought of her being hurt sent rage coursing through his body. He couldn’t even bring himself to think about the possibility of her being dead. He would kill anyone who tried to hurt Selene.

What the fuck is wrong with me?

One minute he wanted to warn her, the next he wanted to help her, and now he wanted to guard her with his life? It made absolutely no sense to him.

Maybe old age is finally starting to set in.

It was true, his kind lived extremely long lives, but they were still capable of growing old. He just hadn’t expected it to happen to him. At least, not for another few centuries, if at all.

If he was brutally honest, he thought someone would have killed him off long before he had a chance to grow old.

“So,” she said, breaking into his thoughts. “If one of your friends is a Shapeshifter, what are the others? I was under the assumption that you all stick around with your own kind.”

“To answer your first question,” he said. “My other friend is a Demon.”

“I didn’t ask more than one question,” she said before he could continue.

“You might not have outright asked, but there was definitely a second question,” he told her.

“Fine, enlighten me,” she said. “What was my second question?”
