With her mind made up, she took one last look at the females and then she turned to Arun. She wanted to pull him into her arms and never let go, but she couldn’t. She couldn’t touch him at all. Not if she was going to follow through with her decision.
“We’ll leave first thing in the morning,” she told him, but it was a lie.
She had no intention of waiting until morning, and she had no intention of taking him with her. Because if she did, she wouldn’t be able to go through with it.
He looked at her for a moment before nodding his head. “I’ll let the others know.”
With that, she turned on her heel and walked out of the room. There was only so much silent treatment and suspicious glances she could take, and she’d reached her limit for the day and then some.
She heard Taredd and Dain walking towards her on their way to the dining room. Not wanting to speak or see anyone, she quickly ducked into a spare room and waited until they had passed by. She didn’t want anyone to know where she was going, especially Arun. He would only try to stop her.
After getting to know everyone, she had decided against taking any of them with her. Not because she didn’t like them, but because she did.
Both Natalia and Amberly had been through more than enough in their short lives, they deserved to be happy. Unfortunately, by doing the spell, she was taking that away from them.
Even Taredd, Dain, and Arun deserved to be happy. Yes, they may have been part of the problem, but they had only been doing what they thought was the right thing. She knew that now. If their kind hadn’t come to the Human realm and done what they did, there was no doubt in her mind that the Human race would have destroyed the planet and everything on it years ago.
Guilt ate at her for what she was doing, but she had no choice. It was best for everyone involved, not just a select few. They may hate her for it in the future, but she had to do it.
Maybe the spell will kill me, then I won’t have to worry about everyone hating me.
Selene didn’t want to die, but she also didn’t want to live in a world without Arun.
When she was sure the coast was clear, she crept out of the room and continued along the corridor to her room. She stopped in there just long enough to grab a few items and then she was out the door again.
Arun had placed a spell on all the doors barring anyone from entering the bunker, but it wouldn’t stop anyone from leaving. Selene didn’t know if he would get a warning when she left. She hoped not, but she wasn’t going to hang around to find out.
As soon as she was outside, she spotted a horse tied up to a tree and a cart not far behind it. She headed straight for the horse and untied it. Thankfully, the animal wasn’t attached to the cart, so she didn’t have to worry about spending time unhooking it.
She used her magic to create a saddle and stirrups, slung her bag over her shoulders, and then pulled herself up onto the horse’s back. Once seated, she squeezed the horse between her legs, told it to start moving, and made a clicking sound with her tongue. The horse obeyed instantly and began walking, which quickly turned into a canter and then a gallop as she moved further and further away from the bunker.
As much as it hurt to leave Arun behind, she knew she was doing the right thing, for everyone.
