Chapter 16
Rage filled Arun when he looked at the bruises forming on Selene’s cheek as she slept. He should have known better than to let her enter the cabin before him. He should have checked it out before he let her anywhere near the place.
She was hurt because he’d been too preoccupied thinking about her and the way she made him feel. Arun needed to get his head in the game before something worse happened.
They were lucky this time. He was able to get to her before the attacker could do any real damage, but there was no guarantee they would be so lucky next time.
Arun dragged himself away from her and turned his attention to the dead body on the floor in the main room. The last thing he wanted was for Selene to wake up and see it still lying there.
The male was unmistakably Fae. He didn’t know the male personally, but it wouldn’t take much digging to find out who he was.
Well, I’m not going to find out tonight.
Grabbing the male by the ankles, Arun dragged him outside. He walked a short distance, making sure to keep the cabin in his sights at all times, and unceremoniously dumped the dead body for the wildlife to feast on.
“If he wanted a proper burial, he shouldn’t have come after what’s mine,” Arun said, matter-of-factly.
It didn’t matter when Arun had started to think of Selene as his. All that mattered was she was his to protect and he would kill anyone who tries to harm her in any way. He’d given her his word that nothing would happen to her while he was around, and he planned on keeping his word.
Arun gathered some firewood before returning to the cabin. It wasn’t a particularly warm night, and it was colder inside the cabin than outside. So, he got a fire started before going in search of some food.
He’d noticed her picking at the berries while he’d been cooking the previous night, so he made sure to pick extra, just for her. Since she had been angry with the Vampires for ruining the rabbit meal he’d prepared for them, he decided to surprise her with the same dish.
As quietly as possible, he snuck into the bedroom to check on her. Satisfied that she was still safe and sound, sleeping in the bedroom, he returned to the main room to prepare the food for when she wakes up.
