Arun was no longer in the mood to play around. He needed to put an end to Kolvar so he could deal with his family.
“Fun’s over,” he said, and then swung his sword in a wide arch through the air, decapitating Kolvar in one swift move.
Before his head had hit the floor, Arun was racing towards the others. They were doing their best to hold the line around the stone circle, but there were more and more bad guys coming out the woods along with his family. Even with Arun’s help, it was only a matter of time before they were overrun.
Arun found a gap and filled it. He hacked at anyone who came within reach of his sword, including his family. None of them tried to speak with him, but even if they had, he wouldn’t have stopped to talk to them. At the end of the day, they were there to kill him and his mate. He wasn’t going to allow that to happen. Family or not, there was no way he was letting anyone get past him to hurt his mate.
The beat of the magic grew behind him with every second that passed. Selene’s voice grew in volume and intensity along with the magic. He could tell by the sound of her voice that she was close to finishing the spell.
Soaked in sweat and covered in blood, he doubled his effort. If he stopped fighting now, Selene would die, and it would all be for nothing. He didn’t know what the future held for them, but he knew he wouldn’t be able to live knowing he could never see her again.
Needing to see her face one last time, he angled his body so he could see her while still fighting. What he saw took his breath away. Her entire body was encased in the same glowing rainbow lights that surrounded her as she slept. Only this time, it took on the ghostly form of a Phoenix.
Arun finally understood what she was and why she was so special. Her father may have been a dark Elf, but her mother was a Phoenix. And from the look of it, a rainbow phoenix, at that.
He’d read about them, but he’d never seen one in person. It was rare to see a normal Phoenix, but a rainbow one? Near impossible.
Everyone else must have noticed Selene at the same time as him because suddenly, the fighting stopped. He looked around him to see everyone staring at her in awe and wonder.
Selene’s voice was just as captivating as the rainbow phoenix covering her body. He couldn’t understand the words, but the lyric was musical.
Her eyes were closed, and her face was tilted up as she reached for the sky with her open arms, as if calling to some unseen force. As the last words left her mouth, she clapped her hands together.
A blinding white light emanated from her, quickly followed by an explosion. Arun didn’t have time to worry about Selene before a shockwave knocked him and everyone else off their feet. He flew through the air several feet before hitting one of the standing stones and landing in a heap on the ground.
The last thing he saw before everything went black was Selene. As the light surrounding her went out, she crumpled to the ground.
