Chapter 41

She has swirling rainbow-coloured eyes? What the hell is she?

Arun had never seen anyone with eyes like hers before. He didn’t even know what type of creature had those eyes, or one’s even remotely similar to them.

Unfortunately, they weren’t going to get any answers from the male who claimed to be her father. What a waste of space he turned out to be. He certainly wouldn’t be winning any father of the year awards. Especially not after he’d just admitted to sitting back and watching his daughter go through the horrors she’d faced with his brother, Agnarr.

Arun was actually looking forward to ending the male. He wished he could take his time and make him suffer, but that wasn’t possible. He didn’t know how long it would take Selene to complete the spell, and he couldn’t risk leaving her father alive just in case she ended up in the Elven realm with him. So, Arun had one chance, and one chance only. Because once the spell was done, there would be no going back.

The sound of battle echoed all around the small clearing. Dain and Taredd, along with the females, kept the rest of the bad guys away from Selene while he dealt with her father.

That’s if he even was her father. Dark Elves weren’t prone to speaking the truth, especially if a lie would serve them better.

“Why don’t you show me your best,” Arun taunted.

“Don’t worry, little fairy,” Kolvar sneered. “You won’t be in my way for long.”

“Do I look like I have wings to you?” Arun asked.

Not to mention, he was six foot four. Fairies were only eight to ten inches tall.

“Do I look as if I care?” Kolvar asked.

“I’m sure I told you toshowme your best,” Arun said. “Nottalkme to death.”

That managed to get the reaction Arun had been hoping for. Kolvar finally shut up talking and made the first move. He whipped out two throwing stars and launched them at Arun.

Arun was prepared for such a move. He deftly knocked them out the way with his sword. At the same time, he used his magic to put up a shield around Selene. He didn’t want any stray magic or weapons hitting her while she was busy with the spell.

Kolvar followed the attack with several more throwing stars. Arun easily knocked them away with his sword, which pissed off Kolvar even more. He repeated the move several times, and each time, Arun knocked them out of the air.

Before long, Kolvar was out of throwing stars and pulled out his own sword. He let out a war cry before launching himself at Arun.

He drove his sword straight for Arun’s chest. Arun waited until the last second before stepping out of the way. Kolvar’s momentum prevented him from changing directions and following Arun. As he flew past, Arun slapped him on the arse with the flat of his blade.

If it was possible, Kolvar would have had steam coming out of his ears at that moment in time. He was so furious with Arun for humiliating him with the move that his face was turning red. Arun just smiled at him when he spun around and glared at him.

“Afraid to fight me, or something?” Kolvar ground out.

“Nope,” Arun said, smugly.

“Fight me, then!” Kolvar shouted.

“Nope,” Arun grinned. “I’m having way too much fun seeing how red I can make your face go.”

Arun was wrong. Steam would have been coming out of his ears right about now. If looks could kill, Arun would certainly be dead.

When Kolvar charged him a second time, he was prepared for Arun to step out of the way. So instead of running past like last time, he followed Arun’s movements.

Their swords clashed, the noise blending in with the sound of the battle raging around them. Just like with his brother, Arun let Kolvar do all the attacking while he defended himself. Kolvar would wear himself down, eventually. Arun just hoped it was before Selene completed the spell.

He knew the instant she began chanting the words to the spell. All the hair on the back of his neck and along his arms stood up. The feel of her magic washed over him like a lover’s caress. It was heady and distracting. It was hard enough concentrating on the fight when he knew he was about to lose his heart and soul.

He wanted to go to her so badly. He wanted to hold her one last time, to taste her lips on his one last time. But first, he had to deal with her father. He was just getting ready to end her father, when even more people came running out of the woods to join. All of them were intent on stopping Selene from finishing the spell.

He cursed when he saw who was coming out of the woods. It was none other than his family. They had come to join the fight, but not in a helpful way. Just as he had suspected, they were gunning for himandSelene.

“Looks like I’m not the only one that’s seen a ghost,” Kolvar laughed.
