“See?” Megan tidied her station. “You have to put in the extra effort to win this election. For people like Mrs. Vormelker. After all, you wouldn’t turn in the first draft of a paper without spiffing it up.”
“You’ve got me there.”
“Speaking of winning…” Megan leaned over, braced herself on the back and arm of the molded chair, and dropped her voice to a whisper. “I’ve been doing some digging—I think they call it opposition research—on Fitz with all my clients. I’ve learned a thing or two. Not the kind of things you’ve been busy learning under the covers with him.”
“No. Nope. Please stop.” She had to shut that down now. “Exposing a dirty secret wouldn’t be right—if Fitz even has any at all. I’ll win on the facts and the facts alone.”
“That’s very high-minded of you.”
“Thanks.”
Megan straightened up and snorted. “It wasn’t a compliment. Playing fair and having ethics—sheesh, this isn’t a T-ball game, Hallie. It’s politics!”
“I’ll be mayor on my terms or not at all.” But Hallie did wonder…
