Shelby jumped to her feet. “These are harsh accusations, Ms. Scott. Do you have any proof?”

“Oh, I do. I have stats and facts to back up every statement, which I’d be happy to email you afterward. But for now? Well, I hate to be a cliché. Bad enough that I’m a Taurus who’s very stubborn. Anyone who lives with a Taurus knows we dig in our heels over the littlest things.” Hallie grimaced, got a couple of knowing snorts. Geez, she really stank at a planned-out joke.

“Worse still that I’m a librarian who has shushed a person or twenty this month alone.” A little more laughter. “But librarians have a bad reputation for burying people in piles of dull facts. I definitely don’t want to bore anyone.”

Next to her, Fitz sucked in a sharp breath. Guess he’d realized that she’d steamrolled him by taking his own advice.

This time, the roar of laughter was accompanied with hearty applause. Just like that, Hallie felt the tide began to turn her way.

She hoped it wouldn’t make Fitz turn away from her.

And the last feeling she took the time to register before continuing to argue with him was how…incendiary it had been to spar with him. In front of everyone.

Aka,Hallie very much wanted to jump the mayor at that moment.

Impossible, of course. They had the rest of the event to get through. Then lunch on the pier with whoever chose to stay, and then straight back to work for both of them.

But their excellent debate had been stellar foreplay for whenever they were able to be alone again. Hallie very much hoped that’d be soon.

Turned out that she wanted the current mayor—naked—almost as much as she wanted her next breath.
