FORTY-TWO

IZZY

Damn Torque and his big mouth.

Rose is pouting and Sage looks like she’s not sure if she wants to laugh or curse them all. The men just emerged from Church, and Bullet has informed us that a vote has been put forth that all guns and ammunition are being locked up around here until he’s certain we’re not going to start shooting at random people for fun. Of course, Rose and Sage have been protesting while I just sit back and watch the show.

The men are all stern faced, but I see a few biting their lips to keep from laughing. Torque being one of them. He’s standing just behind his father, and when his eyes catch mine, he winks at me. I clear my throat, bringing everyone’s attention back to me and I say easily, “I think you would want us to be able to easily protect ourselves if you aren’t around. If the mob gets through everyone somehow, and I’m not saying it would be easy, but if I need a weapon, one that’s more accessible would be the smart thing.”

“Yeah, exactly,” Sage says righteously.

“Crazy, the last thing I need is you to have access to a gun,” King says firmly, arms crossing over his chest.

“You make it sound like we’re going to get pissed off and start shooting you all,” she snaps, glaring at them. “You’ve pissed me off royally and I have yet to do that.”

“The key word there beingyet,” Stone adds helpfully.

Sage glares at him. “Are you looking to be the first victim?” she threatens mildly.

“Oh, this is stupid,” Rose barks, hands going to her hips. “Fine, lock up the guns and ammo, but the first time I need one and I can’t get it, I’m kicking some asses. Now, all of you get out of my face and I’m going to start dinner. Girls, if you don’t mind helping me?”

Sage and I follow her without a word. I don’t have to know Rose well to know that it is not a question or a suggestion. I glance over my shoulder and see the wary look on all the men’s faces. Guess they know they have some pissed off women, and are probably wondering if Rose will poison them to get it over with.

When we’re in the kitchen, Sage curses and sighs. “Well there just went all our fun. Overbearing cavemen,” she gripes.

Rose snorts and says drily, “You act like you don’t know I can pick a damn lock, and I know the combination to the lock boxes around here.”

Sage perks up. “You do?”

“Bullet thinks he’s smart putting in this kind of rule, but he’s clearly forgotten I’m the one who set up that shit and I’m the one who put in the passwords.”

“Couldn’t they just change them?” I ask, curious.

Rose gives me a pitying look. “They’re men, honey, and not that smart. The only one who might think of it is Cryos, being the tech guy and all, but he won’t do it without an order from Bullet.”

“Oh, okay,” I say, still confused. “So you’re just making it look like you’re mad so they’ll think you’re agreeing?”

Rose touches her nose and points at me with a smirk. “Glad to know my son picked a girl with brains.”

Sage snorts. “She’ll stand out in the crowd with the rest of the blondes around here, that’s for sure.”

I assume she means the club girls, since most of them are blonde. I haven’t really seen them much since I got here, but when I do they are definitely glaring at me. Not that I care. As long as they don’t get in my face, or go after Torque, then we can co-exist peacefully. I’d like to think anyway.

My phone rings, pulling me out of my thoughts and I groan softly when I see Zeb’s number. Damn it. I’ve been avoiding him so he doesn’t figure out something’s wrong, but I guess he’s tired of waiting.

“Gonna answer that?” Sage asks as she and Rose pull things from the fridge.

I sigh. “I don’t want to but I better.” I swipe my finger across the screen. “Hello, Zeb,” I say cheerfully.

He’s quiet on the other end for a couple of seconds. “What’s wrong?” he demands.

“What?” I ask in confusion.

“You never answer the damn phone that way, so something is obviously wrong,” he replies. “Is that asshole treating you badly? I’ll be on the next plane down there to kick his ass.”

I laugh, unable to help myself. “Calm yourself, Tiger. There’s nothing wrong, and for your information, he treats me very well. Ever think maybe that’s why I answered so cheerfully. Good sex will do that for you,” I add, tongue in cheek. Sage and Rose both laugh.

I can practically see Zeb scowling on the other side of the phone. “Why do you insist on saying that shit to me?” he groans. “As far as I’m concerned you don’t even know what sex is.”
