She has a point. We quickly set up and Syn reminds me of all the important stuff. Safety on until I want to shoot, finger off the trigger, aim, all of it. Once the gun is in my hand, I relax. I learned to shoot with Zeb, because one of his favorite things to do is go to the range and practice. Of course I used to go with him.
Some might be nervous with guns, but not me. Maybe it’s the power you get when you hold one, but I enjoy it. Enough that I got my handgun license and practiced without Zeb. I’m a decent shot but it’s been a bit so I’m probably going to be rusty until I get back in the groove again.
“Alright, everyone gets one practice shot,” Syn says. “Then we’ll compare the shots and see where everyone is. Izzy, you go first.”
“Wanna bet the men come running out when they hear the first shot?” Sage chuckles.
“As long as they don’t go running into the field of fire,” Syn says drily. “Might end the day off on a really bad note for someone.” She looks at me. “You ready?”
I nod. “Good to go.” I take my stance, take a deep breath, lift the gun, aim, and fire. The gun recoils slightly, but I stay in place. I note the shot went a little left of the heart I was aiming at, and make a note to adjust myself the next time.
“Nice,” Syn praises. “Sage, you’re next.”
Sage is a bit farther to the left than mine and she pouts. “Damn it. I thought I was better than that. I’ll have to get practicing again.”
“Let me show you girls how it’s done,” Rose says, taking the gun from Sage and then moving into position. She fires one handed, hitting the dummy right in the heart. It wobbles a bit, but stays steady.
“Annie Oakley over here,” I grin.
“I’ve known how to shoot since I was a kid,” she says with a shrug. “Bullet’s helped me hone that skill over the years so I’m able to take care of myself if the situation ever arises.”
“Smart man,” Syn says with a smile. “Alright, the guys haven’t come running, so I think we can keep going.”
We each do a few more rounds and with my last one, I hit the dummy dead center in the heart and then a follow up one in the head. “Guess we know you can shoot,” Syn says. “Your form is good, so I don’t think we have to worry about you handling a gun if you need to.”
“I’m feeling better,” I admit with a smile. “I don’t like feeling powerless.”
“You’re far from powerless,” Syn admonishes me. “The only way you are is if you let yourself feel powerless. If you’re ever in a situation you need to fight, you fight. Don’t let your head get in the way. No self-doubt, no second guessing, nothing. You do what you have to do and worry about the consequences later.”
“Thanks,” I say with a smile. “Alright, I want to see if I can hit that dildo. First one to hit it gets what?”
“What the fuck are you doing?” a deep voice barks behind us, making us all turn and see half the guys in the club stalking towards us. Bullet and King are leading the charge, but Torque isn’t far behind.
“What does it look like, honey?” Rose says sweetly. “Just a little target practice.”
We all snort and start laughing at her obviouslittlereference. Bullet scowls harder and stops, hands on his hips a few feet away. “What’s so damn funny?” he demands, pinning us all with a hard look.
“Wait, is that a dick on that dummy?” Timber asks loudly, stopping us from answering.
That sets us all off again, and I see King shaking his head, with Torque standing beside him, arms crossed across his chest and eyeing me warily. “I don’t think I like my woman hanging out with yours,” he says to his brother. “Crazy is obviously a bad influence.”
“Hey!” Sage cries. “This wasn’t my fault.”
“Sure it wasn’t, Crazy,” King sighs.
“No, really it wasn’t,” I gasp out, trying to get myself under control.
“Mom,” Stone groans.
“Not hers either,” Sage says gleefully. “I do believe you have only one other option, Stone, on who it might be.”
All the guys look at Syn in disbelief. “What the fuck?” Stone demands. “What kind of cop has a dummy with a dildo attached?”
“I’m not a cop, asshole,” Syn snaps, glaring at him. “How many times do I have to say that to get it through your thick skull?”
“I mean, his name is Stone,” Sage points out helpfully.
“Shut it, woman,” Stone says with a glare.
