“It’s fine, Izzy,” Carson tries to assure me. “Maybe you can show me some other time.”
Before I can say anything else, the door to the shop opens and Torque strides in. “Didn’t realize we were taking a break,” he says casually.
“Talking all about you, handsome,” Timber replies in a high falsetto.
Torque rolls his eyes. He looks at me and arches a brow when he sees my frown. “Problem?”
“Do you have any issue with me showing Carson how to do things on the cars when he’s not busy?” I ask him.
Torque’s face twists in surprise. “Like what?”
“I thought that when he brings in the next car that I can him how to do an inspection properly. He obviously likes cars, and from what I’ve heard, he’s done the basic stuff the last few weeks anyway.”
Torque glances at Carson who’s watching our exchange with wide eyes. “What did you tell her, Prospect, when she suggested it?” he asks.
“I told her not to worry about it today, but we can do it another time. I don’t want to get in the way,” Carson says with a shrug.
“Hmm.” He looks back at me. “You want to teach him, I don’t have a problem with it, but he’s got shit he has to do as a prospect, so that means he won’t always be able to when it works for you.”
I nod. “I understand.”
“Good.” He looks at Carson. “Take this one out and then bring the next one in. Izzy will show you and hopefully you’ll learn something.”
Carson smiles widely, and I smile back, pleased. Now I kind of know how Zeb felt with me. It’s exciting to teach someone who obviously wants to learn. He turns and hurries over to open the shop door. As it rolls up, he heads back for the car and I turn to look up at Torque.
“Thanks,” I say with a smile.
He grins at me. “I’m not about to turn down the opportunity to get a new mechanic to use on rotation.”
I open my mouth to reply, when a pop sounds, and the light behind me explodes. I scream in surprise, but it’s quickly cut off as Torque tackles me to the floor as more shots ring out. I hit it hard enough to knock the wind out of me. Torque is over me, and he quickly rolls us across the floor until we’re behind the sitting car.
“Are you alright?” Torque growls.
“Yeah,” I gasp out.
“Stay down and don’t move,” he orders before he’s off me and up, crouching. “Everyone okay?” he calls out.
“Good over here,” Timber calls back, voice hard; nothing like the easy-going guy earlier.
“Me too,” Titan hollers back.
“Carson, you good?” Torque calls.
There’s silence for a moment and my stomach sinks, dread pooling. I peer under the car and that’s when I realize Carson is on the ground and there’s blood under him. “Oh my God,” I gasp. “He’s been shot, Torque,” I cry.
“Fuck,” Torque hisses. “Titan, call an ambulance. Timber, cover me. Izzy, don’t move.”
I’m not about to move, but I watch helplessly as Torque rushes towards Carson with Timber right behind him, gun in hand. I don’t know where he got it, but I’m grateful he has it.
Carefully, I peer around the car and look out into the lot. I don’t know where that shot came from, but I know it was for me. That can only mean one thing.
The mob knows where I am, and they’re not messing around.
