TWENTY-TWO

TORQUE

We just got the break we needed, but not like I thought we would.

“Is there a reason you’re here annoying me?” I ask drily as I continue to sort through the work orders from today. I really need to find a receptionist or someone to handle this for me. With the shop getting busier, I don’t have nearly as much time to do everything.

Raven rolls her eyes as she moves around my desk and takes the papers from my hand, making me scowl. “If you’re going to do this, you should do it right the first time,” she replies smugly. “You know, seeing as this is kind of what I do for a living. Or do you not want your sister to help you?”

“You’re not my sister,” I retort irritably. “You’re just some stray we picked up on the side of the road.”

It’s a common line, especially since we really have no blood relation. Still, my parents “adopted” Raven as their own, which she has taken to heart and wants to constantly annoy the crap out of us. Before Sage she went after King, but now since Sage has that well in hand, Raven has turned that attention to me.

“Whatever,” Raven scoffs, not at all offended. Everyone knows we’ll drop whatever we’re doing if she needs help. “Sloan is talking to Timber about his car, and I’m bored. Which means you get my help. You should thank me and get out of the way. I’ll have this sorted and inputted for you faster than you ever could.”

I hate that she’s right. I grumble and bitch under my breath for good measure and then I leave her to it. Hey, if she wants to work for free, who am I to argue? Though, knowing Raven, she’s going to want something out of this, though what I have no idea.

When I walk down the hallway, I see Sloan, Timber, and Carson standing there in deep conversation. “Someone key that fancy car of yours or something?” I joke as I step into their circle.

Sloan smirks. “Raven kicked you out of your office, huh?”

I shrug. “I’m not going to complain if she wants to do the job for me. Less work for me.” He chuckles. “So, you got a car problem or you here for a social visit?”

“Ordered new wheels for my SUV,” Sloan answers.

“Titan’s putting them on now,” Timber adds.

“Why can’t Carson do that?” I ask, arching a brow.

“Because he told me if I fuck up, the rich pretty boy will rearrange my face and then let his girl too. I’m still not sure which scenario is worse,” Carson deadpans.

I can’t help it, I start laughing. Timber and Sloan both join me, and Carson looks like he’s fighting a smile. “Good one, kid,” I snicker when I finally calm down. “And just for the record, Raven is the one you need to be afraid of.”

Sloan nods his agreement. “She is clever in her revenge, I’ll give her that. She tell you what happened with her and Mav?”

Maverick is Sloan’s younger brother, who just moved in with his new girlfriend across the hall from them. I wince. “Do I want to know?”

Sloan chokes on a laugh. “He used his key and put itching powder in her underwear drawer,” he explains. “He dumped it in, didn’t touch anything, just shook the drawer. Raven put her underwear on and started screaming. She’s still pissed. Took over a week for her to get the powder out of the drawer, and I had to spend a fortune on new underwear. Not that I’m complaining.”

“Don’t be so sure about that,” Raven drawls as she makes her way back down the hall. “You tried to warn him instead of helping, so don’t think you’re not on my shit list too.”

I sigh and shake my head in disappointment. “Man, is all that money not enough to buy you a working brain?” I tut at him. “Even I know that’s not cool.”

“See?” Raven says with a triumphant nod. “You’ve been upgraded to my favorite brother.”

“Oh goody.”

Sloan rolls his eyes, not looking the least bit terrified. Just then Titan comes into the room, keys in hand. “It’s all ready to go,” he says as he hands Sloan the keys.

“Thanks, man,” Sloan says with a smile. He looks at me. “You got my card on file?”

I smirk at him. “Sure do. I’ll put that right through, along with a case of beer and a new flat screen and you’ll be all set.”

Sloan laughs. “Mav pays the bill so you go ahead and then deal with his cheap ass.”

After Sloan and Raven leave, I head to my office and sigh happily when I realize that Raven did indeed input all the work orders and organized the paperwork for me. Alright, so maybe having a sister isn’t such a bad thing.

Until I realize she changed my computer background to a picture of the ugliest dick I’ve ever seen. I can’t help but laugh though. It’s just so Raven.
