She gives me a knowing look, but nods. She wants to call me on my bullshit, and is probably thinking of a way to make sure it happens. Lord help me with smart women.
A knock on the door makes me turn and see my mother pushing her way inside. She doesn’t even glance my way as she heads right for Izzy, wrapping her up in her arms. “Are you alright?” she demands, looking her over. “You weren’t hurt?”
“No, I’m fine,” Izzy says with a small smile. “Torque pushed me out of the way and covered me. I feel awful about Carson though.”
“Don’t you worry about him,” Mom reassures her, hugging her tight. “He’s getting the best possible care right now and then we’ll set him up at the clubhouse and get him back to full strength.”
“Mom, you’re good in here for a few minutes while I go talk to Dad?” I ask her.
Mom turns and nods, though I don’t miss the way she takes me in, checking to make sure that I’m whole. “Go,” she orders, eyes hard as they stare into mine.
Translation, find the assholes who dared to try and harm her new favorite person and make them pay.
I look at Izzy and say, “I’ll be right back, alright?” Izzy just nods, but I can already tell she’s pulling away.
Damn it all to hell.
I make my way back out to the garage and see the brothers gathered around. The cops have left and the garage doors are all back down. Everyone’s face is hard and grim. The only ones missing are Cryos and Stone, but everyone else has shown up.
“How’s Izzy?” Dad asks when I move to stand in the large circle.
“She’s holding up okay,” I sigh. “She’s talking about wanting to leave. Going back to Missouri or some shit. Something about if she leaves she’ll draw the problem away or at least not have to worry about someone else getting shot.”
“Your mother will convince her to stay,” Sniper predicts. “If anyone can, it’s Rose. Besides, the last thing we want is her to leave and all these assholes go back underground.”
I agree, but silently add that I don’t want her to leave because she’s mine, and now I have to convince her of that. “Did you find anything?” I ask Shadow and Viper.
“Whoever was up there knew how to get down and out without being seen,” Shadow says, eyes dark and hard. Everything about him is on edge and I can see his mind working. “There’s shell casings from a rifle, and it looks like he got off four shots. I looked at the angle and from what I can tell, if he was aiming at Izzy, he was off before he even got started.”
I frown. “So he’s either a bad shot or he wasn’t aiming at Izzy?”
Shadow nods. “Could be he didn’t want to shoot her and just wanted to scare her. Doesn’t explain why he shot more than a couple times though. If he missed, he would have seen Torque tackle her and put her out of harm’s way.”
“We did return fire,” Timber reminds him.
“Before or after the second shot?” Viper asks.
Timber frowns and glances at Titan, who shrugs. “I’m not sure. Happened so fast. We shot in the general direction, but not sure if we hit anything.”
“You see anyone?” King asks.
Both shake their heads. “Never even saw them, so can’t tell you which way they went. The buildings around here are close enough they could have jumped over a few or went down the fire escapes and away from here.”
“Cryos is already pulling up the cameras and will hopefully find something,” Dad announces. “We’re having Church in an hour, so get everything shut down and get to the clubhouse. Torque, Norris is on his way here with a cage and he’ll take Izzy and your mother back to the clubhouse. I don’t want to give these assholes another chance at her.”
I nod, though I’m not happy to have Izzy in a cage and not at my back. “Any word on Carson?” I ask.
Dad shakes his head. “Stone’s there and said they’re working on Carson now. Hopefully we’ll have some news by the time we get to the clubhouse.”
“I’ll go tell Mom and Izzy so they know the plan,” I say.
Dad nods and then turns and looks at King. “You and Sage need to come stay at the clubhouse. We’re not heading into full lockdown, but if they’re going after Izzy, there’s a chance they could go back after her too.”
King nods and grabs his phone. “She’s working from home today so I’ll tell her and then head over to get her. I’ll leave my bike at the house and I can grab it later.”
Within minutes we’re all ready to head out. I don’t even glance at all the keys still sitting in the bin needing to be worked on. I’ll have the prospects make calls and let our clients know why we’re shutting down for the day. The only thing that I want to do right now is get back to the clubhouse and make sure that Izzy is out of harm’s way.
When I walk back into the office, I stop and arch a brow when I see Izzy on the phone. I glance at Mom, who walks over and says quietly, “She refused to sit around and do nothing while you boys talked, so she’s on the phone rebooking the rest of today’s clients.”
