TWENTY-SEVEN
IZZY
Men are idiots. I know I already said it once, but it bears repeating.
“So what’s the deal with you and Torque?” Sage asks me as soon as the door shuts behind him.
Syn, whom I’ve only also just officially met, sighs. “I thought this was supposed to be a get to know her conversation, not an interrogation,” she scolds her friend.
Sage waves that away. “We both know that you don’t believe that for a second.” She gives me a big smile. “I want to know if I’m going to have a new sister-in-law sometime soon.”
“You’d have to be married for that to happen,” Syn points out.
Sage glares at her. “We could be sister-in-laws too if you wouldn’t be so damn stubborn where Stone was concerned,” she retorts pointedly. Syn scowls at her.
Rose rolls her eyes. “I swear you two are worse than my boys. Pay them no mind, honey,” she says to me with a warm smile. “Though I do want to know what the deal is with you and Torque. I have to say he’s a catch as his mother, but we girls have to stick together and I have no problem kicking his ass if he’s pushing you into something you don’t want.”
Sage and Syn stop glaring at each other and nod in agreement. “I have no problem scaring the shit out of him,” Sage promises with an evil smile. “And this crazy bitch can sick her dogs on him,” she adds with a jerk of her thumb at Syn.
Syn snorts. “The only crazy one around here is you, and your man calls you that daily. But yes, I have two trained K9s that can have him shitting his pants in under three seconds if you need it.”
I blink at them all. “Ahhhhh,” I say slowly, unsure of what to reply to exactly. Okay, so maybe I’m seeing Torque’s side of things now. Just a little, but still it’s nice to know that they’re ready to help me if I need them, no questions asked. “I’m not sure what Torque and I are,” I finally say truthfully. “He’s hot, but I’m new to town, and with everything going on, getting involved doesn’t seem like a good idea.”
“We’re not privy to what’s going on being the little women and all,” Sage sniffs.
I pause. Oops, was I not supposed to say anything? I glance at Rose who must realize my confusion, and explains, “Club business isn’t discussed with non-brothers. It’s for our protection, because if we’re ever arrested or detained, we can’t answer anything. It’s a well-known fact, even in law enforcement, which is why they normally never look our way. So how about you give a cliff notes version of what’s going on so we’re not caught unaware.”
I nod. I tell them the bare details, leaving out the shop name, and the people I work with. They’re right, the less they know the better. When I finish, the three women share a glance that tells me they know exactly what’s going on here, even with my paltry amount of detail. “Looks like our boys are going to be busy,” Rose says finally. “Well, don’t you worry, Izzy, we’ll keep you safe. Our boys are the best there is around here.”
I give a small smile. “I was thinking maybe it would be safer for me to go back to Missouri. I have someone I could stay with there.”
Rose shakes her head firmly. “You’ll just be leading danger right to their doorstep, honey,” she says gently. “You don’t want to do that.”
She’s right. I sink back into the couch and tilt my head back to stare at the ceiling. “I don’t know what to do. How the hell does this happen? I moved here to start a new life and fell feet first into trouble.”
Sage snorts. “You’re preaching to the choir, sister. I’m right in that boat with you. That’s how my man and I got together.”
“Even after you told him you broke your ex’s dick,” Syn snickers.
My eyes widen as I lift my head and stare at Sage. “You broke his dick?” I gasp.
Sage shakes her head. “No. I caught him cheating and was trying to be funny about it. I grabbed a frying pan and did a whole ‘Here’s Johnny’ moment, but I scared them so badly the girl riding him landed wrong, and yeah, fractured his dick. I moved here because everyone in town was treating me like the town nut bag.”
“You are a nut bag,” Syn replies.
Sage flips her off. “Anyway, it was a thing, but it worked out alright since I’m here and found a way better man.” She gives me a wicked smile. “I also know he won’t ever think about straying because that thought won’t be far from his mind.”
Okay, Torque’s claims are definitely starting to make way more sense now. I glance at Rose. “Wait, isn’t King your son?” I ask in confusion. “And you’re okay with her threatening him?”
Rose gives me a sly smile. “Honey, you’re going to figure out pretty quickly that when it comes to my sons, they’re a lot like their father, and any punishments they earn from their women are more than likely deserved. So if Torque gets out of line, don’t be afraid to come to me. I have no problem making him pay in the most creative way possible.”
I marvel at these women. This is insane, but at the same time I’m kind of excited I’ve landed in a place where the women are obviously tight-knit, and that the mother of three members doesn’t have her head up her ass when it comes to her sons.
“So you never did tell us, what’s the deal with you and Torque,” Sage says, turning the conversation back to me. “Are you sleeping with him?”
“Not that you have to tell us if you don’t want to,” Syn quickly adds, elbowing Sage in the side with a glare. “You don’t know us.”
“Ah, no, we haven’t slept together,” I say honestly, a little awkward. Hell, his mother is sitting right here. I don’t care how nice she is, I doubt she wants to know about her son’s sex life.
