Chapter eighteen

Bennett

Reecehasn’tansweredany of my calls, and I’m going out of my mind crazy not knowing where she is. I hit dial on her phone again, this time she answers. “Where the fuck are you?” I snap without giving her a moment to actually speak.

“I beg your pardon?”

“Wait, this isn’t Reece. Who is it?”

“Who’s this?” the woman matches my tone.

“Who’s this?” I throw right back at her. She doesn’t respond, forcing me to speak again. “Hello?”

“You haven’t answered my question. Who are you?”

“It’s um...” I swallow the lump in my throat. “Where’s Reece?”

“If you don’t tell me who this is, I’m going to hang up.”

“It’s the president,” I reply with confidence. The woman doesn’t respond. “Hello?”

“I’m here,” she says with a clipped tone. “Why are you calling?”

Her attitude takes me aback. “Is this Tash?”

“It is. What do you want?”

“I need to speak with Reece.”

“Good for you. But, I’m not giving her the phone. You hurt her.”

I close my eyes and lean back in my chair. “May I speak with Reece, please?”

“No, you can’t.” Tash is one headstrong woman.

“I need to speak with her, Tash.”

“That sounds like a ‘you’ problem,” she snaps.

“I’ll remind you who you’re speaking with,” I warn.

“A jackass who threw her under the bus.”

Both Tash’s and my tensions are running at an all-time high. “Tash...”

She cuts me off. “What?” I really like her, she’s deeply protective of Reece and Emily.

I pull myself together and get a grip on my frustrations. “Is she with you?”

“No.” Tash is giving me nothing.

“Do you know where she is?” Again, there’s another uncomfortable and long pause. “Please tell me Reece and Emily are safe? You don’t have to tell me where they are, just that they’re safe.”

“I don’t owe you anything. But...” Tash takes a breath. “Yes, they’re safe.”

I’m not going to push Tash for any other information, because I know Mark will find her. It’s unfair for me to compromise Tash and Reece’s relationship any further. “Thank you, Tash.”

“Hmmm,” she grumbles and hangs up.
