Sassy old lady. “Marine One, yes, I do.”

“Did you mean it in your speech when you said you loved her?”

I scrub my hand over my eyes, rubbing at the pressure mounting at the start of my brows. “I should try and save my career by saying no, but that would be a lie.”

“Why do you love her?”

I’m being dragged over the coals by an old woman I’ve never met and with whom I’ve only had one brief conversation. But, if I don’t have this conversation, then I run the risk of losing Reece and Emily forever. And I don’t want that. “The only explanation I have to offer is because she’s amazing.” May doesn’t respond, and I have to check my phone to make sure it’s still connected. “Ma’am?” She must be thinking about her next step.

“I’ll send you my address. You can have the helicopter land on my property. If I were you, I wouldn’t leave it too long.”

I jump off the sofa and head straight to speak with Mark. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome. Don’t scare my chickens.”

“No, ma’am, I won’t.” I hang up and by the time I reach the door, she’s texted me her address.

I’m going to Hope River. Now.
