I slowly gather my things and start to head toward the door. “I made good on my promise, Mr. President. I told you why I’m an escort, now you have to make good on yours.” I look to the door indicating Grayson, then back to Bennett. I place my hand on the handle and turn to him. “Please, don’t contact me.”

“Reece,” he calls as I open the door to his bedroom. His Secret Service detail is standing rigid in the hall. “Reece!” I walk out to find Grayson waiting for me. The door opens as we head to the elevator in silence. “God damn it, Reece!”

I refuse to turn around as I wait for the elevator. Grayson blocks my path so I can’t make a quick getaway. “Ma’am.” He looks over my shoulder.

Turning, I silently plead with Bennett. With my chin quivering and tears brimming in my eyes, I hold onto my dignity and pride with everything I have. Bennett runs toward me and enshrouds me in his warm hug. “Please,” I beg. “This has to end.”

“I can’t let you go,” he whispers as he kisses my cheek.

The elevator door opens, and I step backward, breaking his hold. Grayson moves out of the way. “You have to,” I say as I step into the elevator flanked by Grayson. I lower my chin and look down at the floor. The doors close, and I watch as my tears fall to the floor.

He’s the president.

And I’m an escort.

I have to do what’s right for him, and Emily, and three-hundred and thirty-three million people.

We can’t be together.
