The movie starts, and Tash leans into me to whisper, “Like it’s nothing that the delivery driver was dressed in nice clothes and doesn’t look like a delivery driver?”

“You heard?”

“No, Emily told me.” She glances at my phone, then back to me. “What’s going on?”

I run my hand through my hair and subtly flick my head toward Emily. I’m going to have to tell Tash something, but I don’t know what. “Please believe me when I say I literally can’t tell you.”

“Are you in trouble?”

“God, no. Nothing like that.”

“Is it a client?”

“Kind of, but please don’t ask anything else.”

“Do you like this person?”

Her question throws me, because I wasn’t really expecting such an intimate query. “Part of me does, but another part is struggling with the dynamic. Besides, it’s not like we can be together.”

“Why not? Stranger things have happened.” God love Tash, she sees the good in everyone and everything.

Her words hit me hard. I lay my phone face down on the sofa and throw my arms around Tash’s shoulders. “Thank you, Tash, for taking us in, and for being our family.” I kiss her cheek.

“That’s you avoiding the question. It’s okay. When you can, I’m sure you’ll tell me about this mysterious person.”

I pick my phone up and stare at Bennett’s reply. Dinner, Sunday night. I confirm.

I turn my phone off and slide it onto the coffee table between the pizzas. I want to try and forget about him and his stupid over-protective ways.

If only life was that simple.

Problem is, he’s all I can think about.
