“Leave her, she’ll be fine. Why don’t you go have a nap too?”

I lower my chin and stare at the floor for a moment. I’m desperately tired, and really do need a few hours. “Are you sure?”

“Of course.”

“Thank you.” I walk down the hallway and find Emily. She’s on her back on the bed, holding the book up as she devours it. “I’m going back to the retreat for a nap, but May said you can stay and read. If you need anything, and May is sleeping, come down and get me, okay?”

“Sure, Mom.” As quickly as she gave me her attention, I’ve already lost it to Harry Potter. I walk past May, who smiles although her eyes are struggling to stay open. “You can send her down if anything happens.”

“We’ll be fine.” She flicks her hand at me.

I walk out of May’s and head down to the retreat. It’s peculiar, because other than Tash I’ve never had anyone be so caring about Emily or me. My own mother threw me out because I was a threat to her with her scum boyfriends.

I lie on the bed and look up at the ceiling.

My stomach churns with worry and my heart is beating fast.

I wonder how Bennett is coping. Is he hurting anywhere near as much as I am?
