“For being an idiot! You love him and you let him tell you that he loves you without saying anything back. How could you do that? No wonder he’s been playing like total dog shit! If Thunder fans knew what you did, you would be the most hated person in all of Oklahoma! If they lose we’ll be tied in the series two-two and play two more games in New York before the final in Oklahoma City! You have to fix this!”
“Did I really screw up bad?” Callie turned to Cassie, who looked back at her with sad eyes.
“I’m afraid so. Did I tell you he came by the apartment?”
“No! When?”
“Right after you told Aria and me what a dumbass thing you did. You weren’t home. I don’t remember where you were. I told him I was sorry and to maybe give you time. That was all I could think to say. Have you tried calling him?”
“Yeah, but it just keeps going straight to voicemail. They must already be on the plane. Or he’s ignoring me because I broke his heart and he never wants to talk to me ever again.”
“I don’t believe that. If he knew you were calling, he would answer, I’m sure of it,” Cassie told her. “There’s only one thing you have to do then.”
“What’s that?”
“Hop on a plane and go after your man!”
“What? I can’t do that! Do you know how much a plane ticket to New York would cost?”
“I don’t care how much it costs,” Aria said. “I’m buying the ticket. In fact, I’m buying three tickets, so Cassie and I can see the look on loverboy’s face when he answers the door to his room and sees you on the other side.”
“No, Aria. That’s too much. I can’t let you do that.”
“Please, girl. Do you know how much I make at the bar on a weekend? That will easily cover three plane tickets for us.”
“Tell me why you dance again?”
“Easy. I like being the center of attention.”
Three and a half hours later, the girls found themselves outside of LaGuardia, waiting on a taxi to take them to the hotel where the Thunder were staying.
“Do you know where his room is? Or how to find it?” Cassie asked her.
“Yeah. He always gave me his information in case for some weird reason I couldn’t get him on his cell phone. Before he dropped the L word in my lap, he gave me all the information.”
“I just checked the game. They got beat. Bad. Apparently you did a number on him, girly,” Aria said, handing her phone to Callie so she could see the score.
“Aria! Don’t show her that! You’re not helping at all!”
Just then, a cab driver pulled up to where they were standing. The girls gave the driver the address to the hotel and they were off.
“What if he doesn’t want to see me?”
“That’s easy. We call him a loser, throw a pizza in his face, and go home,” Aria said, wrapping an arm around her.
“You mean the magic pizza that is always lying in the floor of one of the nicest hotels in New York City?”
“Very funny. I’ll buy one at a stand then before we go up to his room, if that will make you feel better.”
“I just don’t want him to hate me.”
“Honey, he just told you he loved you,” Cassie said, giving Callie a reassuring pat on her back. “And once he realizes you came all the way here for him, to tell him that you love him, too, I think he will forgive you for letting him walk away.”
Callie wasn’t sure. Her friends didn’t see the look on his face as he waited for her to utter those three words back to him. She wanted to, she really did. Callie loved Kyle more than she ever knew it was possible to love another person. But she was so scared. Terrified of giving her heart to someone and having him crush it. She couldn’t take that again, especially when her feelings for Kyle were so much more than anything she ever felt for Matt.
So when he told her he loved her in probably the most amazing, romantic way possible, she just stared at him. And then ran out of the room. She even took his t-shirt. Who does that?
“We’re here.” Aria nudged Callie with her elbow, waking her up from her reverie.
