"Please come back to me." I beg my father. I can't lose him. Not like this. My heavy bloodshot eyes closed as my head rested beside his arm. My body needed sleep and it didn’t matter if I tried to fight it, I knew I wouldn’t win in the end.

Alexander's POV

Katie is destroyed. I stayed in the hallway while she cleaned her father’s blood off her. Should I go in? I kept asking myself, but I didn't want to see her if she was naked. I love her and haven’t even told her. Was it weird that I was so much older? That I had helped Damian raise her? I shook the thoughts from my head. No, she’s almost eighteen, I’ll tell her then. A part of me was hoping she loved me too, though I know this is a forbidden love. Damian would never allow us to be together even if she felt the same. It was low for an alpha to get with their beta and that’s exactly what she would become, my alpha. I knocked on her door and entered, not even bothering to wait for a response. I needed to see that she was as ok as possible given the circumstance.

Katie stood there in her ash-gray sweatpants, they looked so soft to the touch yet not overly soft. Her loose-fitting black shirt hid every curve in her upper body perfectly concealing her breast from anyone’s gaze. Katie had thrown her hair up into a messy bun and honestly, it fits her so well. She's trying so hard to be strong and not cry but all I can think about is how I almost let her father die. I rushed to her and embraced her; I love her. I kept telling myself, and it breaks me seeing the pain she is in. I wish I could make this all go away. I wanted to explain to her my feelings but also what happened to her father, why am I so scared to say it.

No, I need to focus on what happened tonight. I don’t need to blindside her with my feelings while she’s in a vulnerable state. She pulled away from me. The look on her face was that of mixed emotions and my heart sank to my stomach. Please don’t hate me because of tonight, oh Katie how I wish it would have been me.

"Alex, I know you did your best." She told me softly as the tears came back and yet the softness in her voice didn’t make the words hurt any less. I didn't know what to say as I followed her silently back to her father. I didn’t know how to even attempt to comfort her, and it killed me. The silence was making my heartbeat so fast and loud that I’m sure she could hear it as we walked. I was nervous about losing Damian and Katie all in one night.Katie was my very reason for living and seeing her this way made me want to end it all. I would give anything to trade places with her father if he meant she would smile. I was truly devoted to making her happy. I would gladly give up my own life to see her smile.

The rest of the pack had cleared out because Derrick threatened them all if they returned. He also came to tell us the alpha is in a coma, but my focus was on Katie, I didn't want her to faint. I stood there near her on the off chance the news was so grim that she needed to be caught to prevent injury to herself if she did in fact collapse. We walked into his room and his blood was everywhere, there were blood-soaked rags from where Derrick tried cleaning the floor but gave up. I was feeling sick to my stomach which was odd as I’ve killed countless people. Maybe because it was his blood?

Katie was begging her father to come back as she sat in a rather uncomfortable chair beside him. Derrick nodded to me to follow him and so I did. He walked further away from Katie. Fuck. Damian didn’t even look like my best friend anymore when I caught a glimpse of him. He was so pale, almost gray. I knew what this meant and yet I didn’t want to accept it. We were losing him. She was losing him. My chest tightened and it became difficult to breathe, almost like my lungs forgot how to work.

"He was seriously injured and I'm not sure when he will wake up." Derrick explained while making sure Katie was out of earshot. He knew this would crush any hope she had like a bug under a shoe.

"The wolfsbane was in his system longer than it should have been so there may be lasting effects."

Damn. This won't be good for anyone if the alpha becomes extremely weakened during his recovery, the pack is already a target as is.

"When will we know?" I ask Derrick as we need to be as prepared as possible. I needed to prepare the pack's fighters for the possibility of a large-scale attack against us.

"I'll run some tests and see if anything comes up. Let’s get back before she worries." Derrick tells me and he is right. Katie will have noticed that we were missing and would know that something was seriously wrong.

As we walk back, Katie is sound asleep holding onto her father’s hand. She looked so peaceful yet so scared. Her hand held a tight grip on her father’s, and it looked like his arm was wet with her tears. I need to tell her soon that I love her so that she knows and doesn’t think she will be left alone in case he passes. How would I even start that conversation? I sat down against the wall and fell asleep with my head propped back. There was no way I was leaving them.
