Chapter 28
A Poison to End Them All
Katie’s POV
I just had amazing sex and a nice shower with my mate and I can’t believe it happened. I walked out of the bathroom and stopped at my dresser to grab more panties and shorts, but he stopped me.
“You don’t need them babe come here first.” Dylan called for me as he pulled me back to the bed, was this going to be round two? I loved the sex, but I hope we aren’t going again I’m sore and tired. “Lay on your stomach, babe.” And just like that, I found myself listening to him without question. As I laid down on my stomach, I felt Dylan climb on top of me and start rubbing my back. A massage? It felt nice as his hands worked the knots out of my back, his kisses showering me here and there. Then he moved on to my legs and feet making sure every inch received a nice relaxing massage. If this is what happens after sex, I’m fine with having sex as much as Dylan wants.
“Roll over.” I did and right to work he went, massaging the front of my body now to include my breast. And once he reached them, the moan that came out of me was immediate. “You’re tempting but that’s enough sex for today.” He laughed and rolled off me to lay down. Something about the way he looked at me just then was amazing. He cares about me and knows how to treat me even in bed, I’m glad Dylan is mine. I got out of bed and went to my dresser; this time Dylan didn’t stop me as I grabbed a pair of black lacy panties and a baggy shirt. I was tired and didn’t even know why since he had done all the work. I got dressed then went back to the bed and threw his boxers at him. He smiled and pulled them on before rolling onto his side and pulling me into him. Absolute perfection as we lay there cuddled in each other’s arms. As the snoring started, I knew he was sound asleep, and with that I myself fell asleep with a smile on my face.
Derrick’s POV
News had spread about Dylan being Katie’s mate and honestly, they seemed like a good couple given the circumstances so I’m glad they ended up being mates. I finished eating dinner in the dining hall and made my way to Damian’s office. He had been so stressed someone needed to check on him.
“Damian?” I entered without knocking because I noticed he would fake being fine if he was given a proper warning. Fuck. “ALEXANDER!!!!!” I screamed at the top of my lungs. Damian was out cold on the floor and extremely pale. Without hesitation, Alexander was in the office with me as we lifted Damian off the floor and onto his couch. I was checking for his pulse while Alexander shook him some. Come on, where is it, there it is. I sighed from relief of finding a pulse, Damian had started to get weaker recently and I’m sure it was due to the stress.
“Damian, are you ok?” He seemed completely out of it yet there was no alcohol in sight, so he clearly wasn’t drunk. He also didn’t smell like alcohol, odd. Maybe this lack of sleep has finally caught up to him?
“I’m fine. I just fell asleep.” He sounded so out of it, but it was very good. Still, we should move him to the medical wing so I can care for him.
“How about-” The glare I got was enough to prevent words from forming. It’s as if his demonic look was worse now than it had ever been.
“No. I’m fine, I do not need any treatment or test.” Alexander looked at me then Damian as he refused medical care. I shook my head and left his office, he was alive and talking; not much more I could do.
Alexander’s POV
“Damian, you need to be looked at.” This would not be a pleasant conversation to have however it needed to be said. My best friend looks like absolute shit, something is clearly wrong with him. He just needs to stop being so stubborn, I know he has been up with almost no sleep-in weeks preparing for a possible attack and hunting for another traitor but still, self-care is important.
“Alexander, I'm fine. I feel perfectly fine aside from being exhausted.” He paused as he sat up on the couch. “However, I still have an odd feeling that someone inside the pack is a threat. Call it what you will but things just don’t make sense.” He isn’t wrong, why send a mere child alone for something like this. I sat down on the opposite side of the couch and ran my hand through my hair. The only question is how we bring that person out.
“We need to figure it out. I take it, calling the number back still won't work?” He has had Tagon’s phone this entire time and he knows now it is his adopted uncle behind the attacks. Surely, he has thought about calling the number back regardless of the outcome of the call. “The number was private so it couldn’t be redialed.” He sounded so defeated as if he had almost given up on trying to find a way to track his uncle down. As if he has changed from offensive to defensive in this game of cat and mouse. There are advantages to both, but if the fighting happens on our territory, we have a better chance on the defensive end as we will know the land better. This will be a war and I’m not sure what the outcome will be as I’m sure word has traveled outside of the pack now about who Damian truly is. A prince lost in time; long thought dead has actually been alive this entire time.
“He will not get my daughter. I do not care if I die in the process Alex.” The realization that my best friend could die finally hit me. War was never kind, nor did it know any restraints. We need to increase our training for the pack to prepare better.
“Promise me you’ll keep her safe.” Just like that my best friend fell asleep sitting straight up. I may not be her mate, but I still love and care about her, I’ll always keep Katie safe. If that punk-ass kid hurts her then I’ll kill him and show her how a real man should be. I threw a blanket over Damian and left his office.
If Dylan is with Katie, I need you both to stand guard at the alpha’s office. He is asleep inside. I called for the twins telepathically and within minutes they were at the office door. I’m still shocked that Katie was able to outrun them due to how fast those two moves.
“The alpha is extremely exhausted. No one is allowed in or out, not even Derrick.” I know Derrick will come back and try to give Damian something to sleep better but I’m not dealing with that bullshit. I sighed as the twins rolled their eyes. They also agree he needs to sleep better but my hands are completely tied due to his stubborn ass.
I leave them to do what they do best and look for Bradley. We need to get more people through training and fast because if Damian is this worried then we need to heighten our alert status within the pack. I’ve never seen him so paranoid about an attack before, let alone this rough. When we were kids and just massacred people, he wasn’t even this tired.
“Bradley, there you are.” I finally found this asshole and what do you know he is with Mason and Drake. I looked over and saw Rune helping get their pack’s fighters up to par with ours. Drake had an amazing beta at his side and I’m thankful for that. Rune seems to know a decent amount about different fighting tactics which will work well for us, sadly this pack being from Canada they haven’t truly been in many conflicts that resulted in true fighting or dirty fighting.
“We’ve been running some training cycles, my apologies.” Bradley was catching his breath while he talked, which makes sense given everything going on in the world. Still, now Bradley had what he wanted, his son turned out to be Katie’s mate and Katie just so happens to be the fucking princess. Win-win for him, not only did he get the pack but now, if we fail, a kingdom. Surely after everything Katie won’t want the crown just like her father declined it, at least, I hope. There is a lot of bad with that way of life and I do not wish it on anyone. Thankfully we spared the details to Katie about why we did what we did, I wasn’t sure how much she could take if she knew the full truth of it all.
“We need to increase joint training and joint patrols between the packs. The alpha feels something may happen soon and he still believes there is another traitor.” I let them know as we needed to get this started right away. Joint training can be insanely difficult, more so if one group is way worse off than the other. This will be interesting to see how it works and it will take all hands-on deck, alphas included.
“I agree with their being another traitor.” Drake spoke up finally. I thought he was going to sit there and let this stay between Bradley and myself. “It doesn’t make sense to only have one for this size pack.” Using his brain like an alpha planning a war, good. Maybe we need to redo the interrogations the twins did. Something is just off with this and the fact they haven’t attacked yet. Orion is not the type to give up so easily more so since it was a kid who was killed. He is ruthless and doesn’t even care about his own people, never has.
“Any idea on who it could be?” Mason decided to finally join us in conversation. It isn’t hard to make guesses but if I said Jace in front of Bradley then he may tip him off. Damian has made it clear if it has anything to do with Jace do not tell Bradley as those two are close, they were alpha and beta after all.
“Honestly? No idea.” I wasn’t even sure anymore who it could be. The twins have never failed at finding a traitor, but I did hear Derrick wouldn’t let them use their normal methods on Jace. I get it they are mates, but this is more important. Maybe I can get them apart long enough for the twins to do their job properly.
“Could it be someone from the merge?” Drake’s tone had gone cold as he flat-out accused Bradley and his pack. In all fairness, we didn’t have these issues until their pack came here so I can see how it would appear that way. Mason moved faster than I could realize what was going on, Bradley had moved to punch Drake with only Mason stopping him.
“Enough.” I can’t believe they would fight each other at a time like this. Sure, it was a low blow calling our Bradley’s pack that way however it was a fair assumption. Yet if they had the energy for fighting each other they had the energy for training people to build our defenses.
“Why don’t you both assist in training since you’re so bent on aggression?” I asked not even caring about Drake being an alpha. I was done. This was coming down to life and death and we needed to be prepared, at the rate training is going it will take months before we are properly prepared to defend our territory. They gave me a death glare and headed over to the group of people training.
“You know Alexander one day speaking like that will get you killed.” Mason elbowed me laughing. I didn’t care who got pissed off we needed to train.
