Chapter 26

He Was Always There

Katie’s POV

It had been a few weeks since I had seen anyone but the twins or my father. Something about them not being able to find the other insider put my father on high alert. I even ate in my room after the twins personally cooked for me. I have to give Aspen credit because he is an amazing cook. It’s brought some joy to being locked in my room at least since I’m able to talk to him periodically. It’s been hard keeping my mind off Dylan, just everything about him and wanting him. Then there is Alexander, everything about him is safe. I need to focus on my thoughts, my emotions, my everything, because if I do focus then I’ll be able to figure out who my mate truly is. My father told me I haven’t because of everything going on stress-wise, that at times that can affect sensing your own mate. Aspen said it's common to happen to a newly turned eighteen-year-old werewolves.

“Hey.” Was all I heard; I was so in thought I didn’t even hear the knocking nor the door open. Aspen stood there with food in his hands, baked chicken, mashed potatoes, and peas. My stomach rumbled just looking at the plate of food and this had him laughing.

“As always, made with care.” He sat the plate down and was almost out the door before I could even respond to him.

“Wait!” I jumped up and went to catch Aspen as he was almost out the door. Yet at the single word I uttered, he stopped dead in his tracks, as if he was obeying a command given to him.

“Help me find my mate?” I couldn’t do this anymore. I had feelings for two people, and it was not fair to either. I needed to get past all of this recent stress and while Aspen doesn’t have a mate himself, he does give good advice, or at least he has since I’ve been locked in here.

“You have to do that on your own.” He looked at me rather unamused by my question. “Besides, you sound like a spoiled brat.”

Damnit. He wasn’t wrong. I’ve been an emotional mess for weeks now and here I am trying to get any help possible to find the one thing that should come naturally to me. Aspen left and I sat on the floor. Come on Katie. Come on. I replayed everything in my head, from my father's hidden past, to my ruined birthday and arranged marriage, to my mother’s death. Everything. All of the heartbreak hit me full force but so did the joy, the happiness, the little moments. Cedar, gunpowder, smoke. My eyes flew open as I jumped up. That’s him, that’s my mate’s smell.

I pulled my bedroom doors open and took off running down the hall, my feet connected perfectly with the tile. Aspen and Maddox were so shocked that they paused for a moment before chasing after me, good. I was wearing a pair of short shorts and a tank top just running as fast as my barefoot self would carry me. I was following the scent that I had found intoxicating since my birthday, my mate I would spend forever with. I reached the first floor when it hit me even stronger than ever before as if he was in front of me. As I rounded the corner there stood my father, Dylan, Alexander, and Drake. Their eyes were on me while all that could be heard was the twins shouting for me to stop, yet I didn’t. I ran right into Dylan’s arms causing more confusion than the shouting. The warmth, the sparks, everything was amazing.

“Katie what in the-” My father tried to say but Aspen stopped him. Dylan buried his face against my neck as he pulled me close, he felt it, he actually felt the bond same as me. It felt as if I was on cloud nine, but I would never crash. I could kiss him here and now without caring about anything ever again. Dylan squeezed me tightly to him as if he was afraid this was a dream as if he felt he would wake up at any moment.

“He’s her mate.” Aspen told my father with his hand on my father’s shoulder. Everyone else stood there wide-eyed and Alexander was hurt, oh so hurt. Dylan let me go and I looked at my father with a smile on my face. I finally found my mate and it just happened to be the person my father arranged for me to marry.

“Well then, things worked out in the end.” My father said as he smiled at me, clearly, he was going to take responsibility for me finding my mate, and it was due to him. Dylan looked like he was on top of the world due to us being mates.

“Well then Knight.” Drake spoke up with a smirk on his face. “We will continue to stand beside you, but it was as if you knew he would be her mate.” He chuckled briefly as he walked away to check on his incoming members. I felt Dylan’s hand in mine and couldn’t help from smiling, Alexander however looked furious. I don’t blame him; I know I can’t, he loves me, and yet he isn’t my mate. Aspen and Maddox shifted around on their feet waiting for my father to tell them something in terms of orders.

“She is still to be kept under watch; however, Dylan can be near her, and she can roam the mansion.” My father explained to them as I started heading towards the stairs, my feet were killing me from outrunning the twins to get here. I made it to the top of the first set of stairs to lose my balance, as I fell back Dylan caught me while Aspen rushed into position in case he missed. In seconds I was off my feet completely and in Dylan’s arms.

“I got you, babe.” He said as he ascended the stairs.

Dylan’s POV

As Katie came down the stairs, I knew why she was running, she finally felt the bond I’d been feeling since the first day I saw her. It finally hit her, and I was about to lose all control, the urge to kiss her here and now. It felt even more amazing holding her close to me since she’s figured out I’m her mate. Everyone around was confused yet I knew she was right where she belongs, in my arms. I told her she was mine and I meant it, she just needed to realize it herself. I tuned out whatever people were saying as I went from holding Katie close to holding her hand. Alexander was pissed and I was loving every second of it. Every fucking second of him being miserable due to this was perfect. Before I knew it people left, and Katie was headed upstairs, finally, I got to be alone with her again. I was checking out her ass as we walked upstairs that was until she tripped causing me to catch her suddenly. Aspen moved so fast I thought he was going to hit me to get her or even cause me to drop her, thankfully he stopped once I had her.

“I got you, babe” I looked at her shaking my head, her feet must be hurting and causing her to lose her balance. I’m not a complete asshole so I picked her up and carried her the rest of the way. She was as light as a feather and I could carry her for hours. She on the other hand seemed embarrassed she tripped but I find her adorable.

“Are you ok?” Aspen asked her while Maddox finished laughing. The twins care about her and Damian, no one else and it showed whenever others were around.

“I’m ok.” She said quietly while nuzzled to my chest. I picked up the pace ready to get her back to her room and kiss her. These twins were going to be a thorn in my side at times when it comes to wanting to be alone with Katie. We reached the fifth floor and made our way into her room leaving the twins in the hall.
