Chapter 13
Eighteen Pt3
Katie's POV
Walking down to the first floor I had a weird feeling, like everything was new and this was an unfamiliar place. It was as if I was seeing the world for the first time with the heightened senses I have now and I loved it. However, one scent stood out the most and every inch of me begged to find its source. Since I left my room, I can't shake the smell of cedar, gunpower, and smoke. For whatever reason it was like a drug to me, taunting me. My heart was racing in my chest the closer I got to the first floor. The scent was getting stronger, and I was getting warmer as if I was on fire.
Could this be my mate? Is that who this scent belongs to? But who could he be? I zoned out as I walked to the first floor, this intoxicating scent leading me down every step. I turned to walk into the massive dining hall, but Alice stopped me.
"I've been instructed to announce when you arrive ma'am." She said to me with annoyance in her tone. I knew she disliked me, but I never fully understood why. Was it because my father ignored her advances? Maybe it was because I reminded everyone of my mother? She turned to the room that overflowed with people. No one has even noticed I'm here in the hallway, but I can smell him. A soft whine escaped me though no one else heard. What is wrong with me? I’ve never felt this way about anyone and suddenly I feel as if I’d give myself away to the one this scent belonged to.
"Welcome the heir to the Dark Silence Pack, Katie Knight." Alice exclaimed to the whole room loud and clear. Silence fell over the room and all eyes were locked on me. I took a deep breath before I smiled. This was slightly uncomfortable to have so much attention on me. I saw my father as he walked toward me. He held himself up proudly with a smile. He wore a slim-fit suit vest with white cotton long sleeve shirt and black slim pants. The sleeves were neatly rolled to his elbow and he had a crimson handkerchief in his left breast pocket. He gave me a warm hug.
My father meant so much to me and I was finally happy to see his true smile again. He had been lost for so long in a mindset of vengeance that this side of him was a spark of hope for me.
"Happy Birthday, Katie Bug" He smiled at me as he moved to stand beside me. He turned towards the room with me at his side and shouted, "Everyone your future alpha!"
The room went from dead silent to cheers of joy. I have never felt so proud of being the heir to this pack until right now. My feet were already sore from having worn heels. I absolutely despised them and yet they were on my feet. It didn’t help that my room was on the fifth floor of the mansion.
"Katie, meet the other alphas. They've come here with their betas and high-ranking wolves to meet you." My father said firmly before he took my arm in his and guided me to the two alphas.
We made our way through the crowd as most moved from our path. That was when it hit me, the scent I was longing for. My heart felt as if it would burst out of my chest. I had gotten closer to the scent. I got closer to him, the person driving me mad. The room had picked up in conversation. Whispers of my beauty, their pride in me, and how they wondered who my mate was. Others were simply lost in thought to even notice us. Faster and faster, that was all my heart knew to do. I felt like I was on fire the closer we got. Surely it wasn’t one of these new alphas? It was as if my mind hoped it would be someone I knew; someone I was close to and not someone new. The mate bond would make us feel like we’ve always been close, I guess I’d just prefer to know them. A silent sigh forced itself from my barely parted lips as we finally reached the alphas eagerly waiting for us. My father’s hand gripped my arm tighter as if he dreaded this encounter.
A rather tall male with shaggy brown hair stepped forward. He was covered in so many scars, but he looks so young. He must have been through so much so young to be scared like he was. A part of me wanted to know what happened but I knew that was too personal to ask.
"Hello Ms. Knight." He said to me and bowed to show his respect to me as an heir. I respond by giving a curtsy to him showing my respect that he is an alpha. His eyes were two different colors and that shocked me. I felt them captivate me as I couldn’t look away.
"I'm Drake Seabra, alpha of the White Dawn Pack. You are as stunning as ever. Rumors of your beauty do not compare to how beautiful you truly are. I now understand why your father kept you hidden away from us." He said to me as his Canadian accent echoed slightly in the immediate area.
His tone was emotionless as he spoke as if he was an empty shell. I’m sure over the years and the battles he has been in, he turned his emotions off completely. There was no telling how many people he had lost. He was wearing black dress pants and a white button-up long sleeve shirt with his sleeves rolled to his elbows. His wrist carried his mark. A white half-circle, like a crescent moon. Suddenly the other alpha came up to us.
"Come on Seabra you can't hog her." He teased the alpha in front of me. "Hello beautiful, I'm Eric Walker. Alpha of the Eight Moons Pack. Stunning doesn't scratch the surface of what you are, my lady." He kissed my hand then smiled at me with intent in his eyes I didn't like and wished I would never see again. I'm starting to feel extremely hot which makes no sense because I find this man repulsive.
What's going on with me? All the single males were looking at me like they wanted to pounce on me. I don't understand I'm still me so why did they look at me like this? I focused my attention back to the alphas before me. Eric was short and stocky with ghost coarse-looking white hair and a white beard that matched. His grey eyes looked at me with sexual desire. A desire that I had no intention to give into. I heard a growl; it was my father. The look on his face said it all by how Eric was looking at me.
"Back away from her now." My father growled at him. Now the silence in the air is out of fear and not staring at me.
A quick change no one would have expected at anyone’s birthday party, let alone mine. My father stood there, his fist balled as Eric backed further away. Eric’s beta quickly moved to his side in case anything broke out with my father. Drake chuckled in amusement at the hostile scene before him. Alexander moved closer to us while he still left a gap of space in case I needed to run.
"She's already engaged." He broke the silence. Well, this was true, at least until I figured out who my mate was. He must be close based on how strong his scent was. The other alphas growl at my father as if they were both shocked and ready to attack. Did my father not mention that he sold me off basically?
"What is the meaning of this Knight!" Eric screamed at him.
"So, we came here in hopes of being her mate and she already found him!?" Barked Drake in shock. I saw the tension rise in the room; everyone was on edge. A full-blown fight is on the verge of breaking out and there are women and children here. Not only that if a fight broke out and either visiting alpha was killed it would mean war. A war that I wasn’t sure if we were ready for.
I growled louder than anyone else in the room. Silence. Crickets. That was what followed my growl until I broke it myself.
"Enough!" I yelled at everyone; my southern accent thicker than ever. I tried to sound fierce, but my voice was still on the softer end, something I need to work on.
"I have NOT found my mate. I'm engaged to another heir due to a merger!" I screamed at them. My face was burning and red, I was so angry at what happened.
The alphas stood there in shock that I yelled at them. Drake’s beta quickly ran to his side as he was the only beta who wasn’t nearby. Alexander stared me down, a smirk crossed his face briefly as if he was proud of me. His deep forest green eyes looked me up and down as he took in my appearance. It felt like my heart would explode as he looked at me that way. I couldn’t help but just stare at him as if no one else was in the room. Why was Alexander so attractive? I tried to see if the scent I hunted was him but so many scents had taken over I couldn’t focus properly.
"You had a merger?" Drake broke the silence. He looked very unsettled and confused at the thought of a pack merger. I could tell this would be an issue and that’s why they didn’t know. He quickly glanced at Eric and then Bradley. Eric stood there with an even more confused look. That’s when he knew. His eyes locked onto Bradley, and he growled briefly. He pushed his shaggy hair from his eyes so they could pierce the one he wanted to rip apart. The scars on his face looked brutal. Something I’ve never seen before, what caused them?
"Steele, you promised your son this before she was of age?" He questioned the former alpha. He was livid at this. It's like Drake wanted me all to himself.I shuddered at the thought of marriage again. I’ve done my best to keep my mind off it this past week. That’s when I caught him, Drake. He was fixated on me with a frown on his face. I don’t understand why he was concerned about this; it isn’t like I’m his. I looked back at him and felt the fire in his eyes. A fire I didn’t know if anyone could stop. I gulped as he took a step toward me, but I couldn’t shake the look in his eyes. Why wasn’t I scared of him? Anyone in their right mind would be scared of him based on his scars alone and yet I wasn’t.
"Yes. Dylan is engaged to Ms. Knight." Bradley said to the alpha calmly. He no longer cared about holding his tongue.
