Chapter 30

All Good Things Come to an End

Damian’s POV

Yesterday was something I would have never expected, being able to fight the mate bond long enough to almost kill your mate was something most people couldn’t do. Yet here we are with Jace dead and Derrick rejecting him right before death. At any point in time, you can reject your mate but the toll it takes gets worse the longer you are together, thankfully they weren’t together long so Derrick should be fine. I rolled out of bed and threw on loose-fitting clothes, today I didn’t care how I looked. Wolfsbane was still in my system and I planned to take it easy because if I didn’t, I could cause long-lasting health issues. Damnit. Why did this have to happen to me and how the hell did I not realize I was being poisoned? I threw a picture frame at the wall causing the glass to shatter.

By the time I reached my office, there was a crowd of people waiting on me, great I sighed. I did not want to deal with anyone today, yesterday was plenty for me.

“Father, are you ok?” Katie was the first to speak as we all entered my office. I love my daughter to death, but I didn’t want anyone around me right now, not even her. It was so hard to sit here with a straight face trying to hide the anger I had. I’ve failed my pack as an alpha for letting this happen and yet no one was upset with me. It was as if everyone cared more about me being ok than they did the issue that took place.

“I’m fine, Katie Bug.” I smiled at her weakly, I was far from fine. Derrick determined the amount of wolfsbane given to me over time could kill me with too much physical labor and that it would take months to leave my system. I ordered Derrick to keep it between us two as I wanted no one to know the state I was in. Alexander would have gone off the deep end and Katie would have worried so it’s better this way.

I sat down at my desk as they all swarmed in closing the door. Katie, Dylan, Alexander, Bradley, Derrick, Drake, the twins, and even Rune. It was as if they all came to check on me and yet I just wanted to be alone. Derrick looked nervous more than likely concerned the number of people here would be too much stress on me.

“Why are you all here?” I was already annoyed, and I hadn’t been awake long. This was going to be a long Saturday and I was not amused.

“Training is actually going extremely better than we could have hoped for.” Drake was excited to speak up as if he was just dying to tell me. At least one thing had been going right this entire time. We needed to make sure our two packs could fight well alongside each other since we decided defense was our best option.

“So how ready are we?” The question that needed to be asked but an answer I wasn’t sure I wanted to hear. This defensive force we have built up rather quickly is the only factor in deciding if we make it out alive. Everyone looked at each other as the silence spoke louder than the words anyone could mention.

“We are ready alpha.” Rune spoke up with confidence in his voice and honestly, that was the relief I needed. Rune had been working his ass off with Mason to make sure everyone was as ready as possible. With Jace dead, we could get attacked at any point in time now since there is no longer an insider.

“Derrick, how are you holding up?” I’m sure this has all been hard on him. He almost died, he lost his ex-mate, and he had to deal with me. At least he was smart enough to reject him before his death as losing your mate if you’re still bonded can result in a dark depression no one wants to endure. I should know since I’ve dealt with it every day for thirteen years now. There are still days I wish I was dead instead of continuing.

“I’m here. It’s a lot to process but I’ll be fine.” He said as he gave me a half-smile and lowered his head. Too soon, I got it. A ringing echoed in my office. Someone seriously didn’t mute their phone before coming in here? I cocked my head to the side expecting the person to pull their phone out, but no one did. Weird. This isn’t my phone, it’s Tagon’s. I pulled the drawer open, and her phone was lit up with an unknown number calling her. Orion. There was no one else who would be calling the phone of a dead kid. I answered it by placing the call on the speaker.

Damian:Hello?

Orion:My my nephew I didn’t think you would answer.

Damian: You are no family of mine you fucking coward!

I screamed at him as I jumped out of my chair. Everyone in the room was looking at me confused aside from Alexander. Orion was not my family by blood and once he didn’t stop how my father was, I decided he was no longer family period. He was a coward too afraid to speak up against an abusive asshole.

Orion:Is that any way to treat me? I think not.

Damian:I could care less what you think of how I treat you. You are absolute scum.

Orion:Says the person who murdered his own father and mother.

Damian:Don’t forget to add your name to that list. I’ll make sure you die.

Orion:I wouldn’t be too sure. You look rather weak in your office.

Wait a second. I could be anywhere with this phone how the fuck does he know where I am? I looked behind me at the window and there he stood. Orion and his group of rogues, followers of the fallen monarchy. The irony was if they truly were followers of the monarchy they wouldn’t be by his side.

“This soon, fuck.” Drake yelled as he signaled Rune to summon both their packs. Alexander was already summoning ours. So, this is it, the fight has come to us finally. I made my way outside and stood there with Drake to my right. Alexander moved up to my left and Rune met Drake by his side. Our packs stood behind us mixed together. Orion laughed as Eric joined him, but I didn’t see any of Eric's wolves. Not only that but Eric looked injured. My bet is he was approached by Orion, and they lost which caused him to side with Orion. The important question was where is his pack?

“Only one of us will make it out alive, nephew.” Orion mocked me; his thick northern accent echoed the open area. He was a bigger guy, with bulky muscle instead of lean. He was missing an eye thanks to Alexander years ago and his hair was brittle looking and snow white. He clearly didn’t age well and for that, I didn’t care. His good eye was dark hazelnut brownish gold and he looked like a ghost. His skin was so pale. Alexander growled and was ready to attack.

“Orion, you will die today.” I shifted and ran at him, my black fur danced along my body in the wind. He barely had time to shift before I was on top of him.

“Attack!” Drake screamed as he and everyone behind him shifted charging the group of wolves before us. We had them greatly outnumbered four to one. I liked these odds a lot better than I thought I would. Alexander slammed into Eric as Drake also closed in. Those two would handle him with ease. Dylan and Rune were keeping Katie back towards the door, but she was still outside, she was to be protected at all cost.

We were winning from the looks of things as I glanced around. Orion was fast for his age but there were moments I got the chance to see the fight behind us. That’s when it hits me, the pain in my chest. I stumble and lose my balance, the poison. Orion uses this to his advantage and slams into me forcing me to the ground.

“Father!” Katie screams as Orion gets on top of me and goes for my throat. I rolled as he was inches away causing him to get to the ground, but I can’t keep my form any longer. My body forcefully shifted back, and I stood there taking in the chaos around me. We were winning. The fight didn’t last long as Orion’s wolves were either dead or retreating.
