Chapter 7

Dylan Steele

Katie's POV

We left the office; it was nothing but awkward. "I'll show you your room and you can bring your stuff in." I said to Dylan as I caught him staring. He seemed to always stare at me as if this was love at first sight, yet I didn't feel the same. His staring was repulsive to me.

We walk down the long halls in silence as random females stare at him practically drooling. Sure, he's fine but I don't understand the hype over him, he seems like any other guy. However, I do have to admit that I find his eyes to be dreamy as I for one have gotten lost in them. Ugh, what am I saying? Snap out of it Katie, his eyes aren't that amazing I sigh to myself as we keep walking.

I don't understand why my father just had to put him across the hall from me, this won't make us get closer to each other faster. Truthfully, if anything this is going to be annoying because I'll be forced to see him almost every time I leave my room. I guess this is the pressure of being forced into marriage with a total stranger. Being forced to be near them against your will as if you were being held hostage in your own home.

We finally reached his room on the fifth floor. Father always wanted me high off the ground due to the balcony. It made attacking me from the outside impossible, I exhaled thinking about this. I'm a target due to being my father’s daughter, the only heir to this legendary pack. As a result, my father was always overly protective, more so when my mother was killed. I can't even go outside without a proper escort for fear that I may get injured or worse. Thinking about this made me uncomfortable and I guess my face showed that because suddenly I felt someone grabbing my hand, when I looked it was Dylan. That's when I felt him. He stepped back staring at me as my eyes widened and my mouth opened some in shock at the fact he clasped my hand in his. His eyebrows rose and his eyes softened with concern as he moved closer to me. I stayed there for maybe a moment too long before pulling my hand from his. I don’t want to get close to him. I want to hate him. I’m supposed to hate him.

"Sorry." He said in a softer tone than normal he was trying to be relaxed with me even in his tone of voice. Sorry but the forced comforting tone wasn’t working on me, or was it? "Would you like to hangout and possibly get to know each other? We are getting married after all." He smiled and I looked at him, a blank look on my face.

No, I wouldn't, however it's not like we have much of a choice. Why did my father have to do this to me, he could have picked anyone else in the pack? Quickly, he frowns and I can tell he is thinking that I want nothing to do with him.

He tries to turn away, but I blurt out "Yes".

Frankly, it seemed like the best thing to do given the situation we are in due to this merger. He stopped and his face lit up with a massive smile. Oh no, please tell me I wasn't coming off as eager to know him because it's honestly the complete opposite, way to go Katie just screwing things up even more. Giving this poor man false hope.

"Come with me we can talk in my room and maybe get to know each other a little." I grab his hand and pull him into my room, what am I thinking? I yanked him into my room because I didn't know what else to do. This is becoming awkward, and he is going along with it.As if he might truly have a thing for me. I know that’s not the case, more than likely he has a thing for my body and just wants to fuck. Typical man.

"So, what are some things you like to do?"

If I'm going to be forced into marrying him, when I don't even know my mate, I might as well see if we get along. He looks at me abnormally as if he is confused why I'm suddenly rushing to get to know him. Well, I'm not too happy about this in the slightest and my face must clearly show that so I’m sure he had his suspicions. Sadly, I have no choice. Getting to know my soon to be husband sounds like a better plan than going in blind and possibly getting hurt. I’m terrified quite frankly. My eighteenth birthday is soon and here I am trapped in an arranged marriage. Scared doesn’t begin to describe how I feel about this entire thing. I felt my pulse increase and my heart quickened as I realized I don’t even know my mate and it may not be Dylan. The thought of that is making me sick to my stomach because I don't know what I'll do if I can't be with whoever is my mate. That’s a fate worse than death for our kind. Being forced to reject your own mate due to a blood contract was essentially a death sentence. The rejected mate would be so overcome with emotion that majority of the times they kill themselves.

"I love being outdoors, reading, listening to music, and spending time with friends." He said to me as his eyes fell on mine.

His gaze was drawing me in as I stood there in awkward silence, how does he captivate me with just his eyes alone so that it leaves me speechless. He starts to smile at me as if he knows I just can't look away from him. It was like he was happy I was trapped there staring at him as if it’s what he wanted. He seemed like someone from a dream with how attractive he was yet looks don’t make a person. Straight up, what is this weird feeling between us? He looked at me as if he had known me forever, and a mystery at the same time.

"I enjoy all of that minus the friends part. Sadly, I don't really have any friends." I make an uncomfortable face. Most people my age have tons of friends and the fact I'm an heir to the pack everyone should want to be friends with me. Dylan must think I'm a liar because of the fact I just blatantly said I have no friends, the look on his confused face says it all.

Still, he may think I’m making this up because of any male friends. My father has been so protective of me that Alexander is the only person who has gotten close to me. That's why we are close and a part of my heart hopes that he is my mate because, at least, I know him well enough to be with him. Since I’m being sold off maybe it would be best to at least already be close with my mate. I also know that Alexander would challenge Dylan for me if he was and Dylan would lose that battle. No, what am I saying? I need to give him a chance., One person did try becoming my friend and they ended up getting killed during a rogue attack, since then I have been on an even tighter restriction escort-wise. I still blame myself for us sneaking out that day. The people assigned to escort me around don't talk to me for fear my father would punish them if he deemed it flirting in any way. My father seemed to always punish those around me, he led this pack with an iron fist.

"Wait, you don't have friends?" He looked at me surprised. "I don't understand." Yeah, that was pretty clear based on the look on your face there, captain obvious. I sigh and sit on my bed and look at him frozen there at a loss of words as to how I had no friends, no one close to me. He watched me and I hoped he couldn't see how this was hard to explain as I was sitting there fidgeting with my fingers. Why must this be how we spend our time instead of talking about something else? I hated talking about this because it just makes me sound like such a pathetic person.

Groaning, I explain as I can't take him staring at me in silence anymore. "My father is extremely protective of me. I'm only close to him and Alexander as a result of this overprotectiveness. I had a friend years ago and he was killed, Him and his mate."

I start to cry as I remember how I watched them get ripped apart in front of me as Alexander ran to me. Damn rogues. I hate losing people and the fact that the only friend I've ever made was killed in front of me crushed me. I started crying just thinking about the awful slaughter of them, why am I always so emotional? Suddenly I felt a warm embrace, Dylan, he had moved to me and held me against his chest as I cried recalling the incident. Why did his warmth feel so good yet so wrong?

"I'm sorry-I" I start to try and explain but he cuts me off

"Shhh it's ok." He reassured me as he held me tightly and stroked my hair. "I'm here and I'll be your friend forever, I promise." He said to me as the tears stopped flowing.

I pulled away from him and smiled a little trying to break eye contact. He leaned in and cupped my right cheek in his hand. We were mere inches from each other’s faces and my heart was racing, but I couldn't tell if it was from being excited in a good way or scared of what he would do to me. He had me trapped in a trance as if he was the only person in the world. He pulled away as if he was afraid of what may happen if he tried anything.

"I should go get my belongings and bring them to my room. Can we exchange numbers and text each other?" He was smiling at me and brushed the hair out of my face before standing up and pulling his phone out.I nodded to him and typed my number into his phone.

Dylan's POV

"I should go get my belongings and bring them to my room. Can we exchange numbers and text each other?" I look at her and she doesn't seem to like the fact I'm leaving soon but I must get moved in. "Here's my number. Text me, ok?" I hope she does. I'd love to get to know her more.

She added my number to her phone, and I walked out. Maybe I was wrong about her, maybe she isn’t a whore. So many stairs kept me from getting my bags. Why did I have to be on the fifth floor? I headed back down to the first floor to gather my belongings. staircases so wide you could fit a medium group of people without them being crammed together. There were two identical staircases on each side meeting in the middle with a landing at the top, crimson rugs ran the entire length. The balustrades and spindles were black and cool to the touch. The white walls were lined with black trim along the baseboards and crown. Every window in sight was traced with black. Black beams ran across the ceiling ever so evenly spaced. It had high ceilings with stunning archways. They seemed like they were designed for royalty with the amount of intricate white rose designs carved into their crown molding. It appeared hand-carved instead of machine produced, this would have taken a heavy amount of dedication from the architect. The lights were ceiling mounted and elegant as ever, black iron chandeliers that curled into a swirled tall design. Crystals hung from the bottom of the iron frames. White marble floors were so reflective you could see yourself in the shine as if it was a mirror.

Every door we passed was black with curved crimson handles. We never had anything like this back home, home. I thought to myself that this was home now. It's still weird to think of somewhere other than our small cabin village as home. Those old cedar log cabins all within a stone’s throw of each other in the woods away from nosey people, oh how I miss it already. The smell of fresh douglas fir trees and pines stained the air. Maybe I could show Katie what home for me was. Most smaller packs lived in areas like this or city neighborhoods. However, who likes the city?

I continued to walk through the halls while multiple unknown females kept watching me and I hated it. Normally I would be ok with this type of attention but something about Katie made me want only her. I let out a light scoff towards them showing my disgust as they continued to stare. Man, these women are going to be a pain. Some look decent but most are just well...they aren't my type. If they didn’t stop I may have to just punish them somehow without Katie knowing. Then I’d have an issue with them craving more of me.

I walked outside to see my father walking with the alpha. They talked and laughed together. I don't understand them. The alpha rejects my father as being a beta, yet they are close friends. I shake my head and walk over to the car to grab my things. They see me but don't say anything. If looks could kill I would have died from the way Damian glanced back at me over his shoulder. I head back inside, careful to not drop anything. These stairs are going to get old I sigh to myself. As I reach my room my phone goes off.

Hey, It's Katie.
