“It isna good to stay in your head too much,” Cullen said, breaking into Brandr’s thoughts.
He ran a hand over his jaw. He was tired, and the fight was only getting started. Eurwen was mated to Vaughn now. They were happy. He wanted them to remain that way. A war would jeopardize that—it would threaten everything.
“You’re more like your father than you care to admit,” Cullen said with a snort.
Brandr shot him an apologetic look. “I have to sort this out.”
“Like I said, just like Con. Take a lesson from him. Con knew he had to make decisions as King of Dragon Kings, but he always wanted our input. The more heads you have working a problem, the easier it is to solve it.”
They had been rehashing the problem for weeks—to no avail. Something drastic had to be done—and Brandr knew what that was.
The sound of children’s laughter reached him. Brandr observed the kids for a moment. Tamlyn and the Alchemist, Sian, were watching over them. At the top of the canyon, the black-spotted fur of a lounging wildcat could be seen.
“That’s Nari,” Cullen said.
Brandr smiled. “The same cat who went after the invisible foe who attacked you?”
“The verra one. She keeps coming back. She walks with me in the evenings.”
“Looks like you have a new friend then.”
Cullen ran a hand over his blond beard. “I know your parents well. You have Con’s sense of justice, and Rhi’s headstrong nature. Your mother is an amazing woman, but she’s prone to making hasty decisions. I hope you’re no’ planning something stupid.”
“If you were in my shoes, what would you do?”
“Something stupid,” Cullen replied with a grin. “Doona be me.”
Brandr looked across the border. “I’m never stupid.”
“Good. I doona want your parents and your sister turning their fury on me.”
Brandr nodded before turning and leaping into the air. He shifted instantly and flapped his wings to take him higher. He flew far from Cullen’s eyes before landing and returning to human form. Brandr made sure the clothes he produced with his magic were plain. Then he crossed the border onto the human side.
Everything going on with Zora was happening on this side. The dragons were safe. Eurwen, his parents, and the other Kings would make sure that didn’t change. This was where he needed to be. Whatever hunted dragons, whatever had gone after him and Eurwen was out here.
And he was going to find it.
