She drew closer to Amsden and lowered her voice, letting her anger fill her. “I was asked to take him to my bed. You simply had to speak to him. I will tell you how to behave because I won’t have you messing this up for the Divine.”

At the mention of their ruler, Amsden took a step back. “The Divine doesn’t need to know how I reacted.”

“I won’t need to tell anyone as long as you report back that things are going well here.”

“They seem to be, so it won’t be a lie.”

“They are,” she said tightly. “Just make sure the Divine knows that.”

Amsden gave a curt nod and walked out. Nia closed the door softly behind him. When she turned around, Sadie was there.

“Is everything all right, ma’am?” the servant asked.

Nia could well understand her question. Amsden had only come to the estate once since it had been given to Nia. She didn’t like the man, and she hoped never to see him again. “Yes. I also wanted to thank you and the others for treating Shaw as if he were any other person.”

“No one else but me knows who he is,” Sadie said. “I didn’t want any of them acting strangely around him.”

Nia put her hand on Sadie’s shoulder and smiled before walking past the servant and returning to Shaw. As soon as he saw her, he opened his arms and met her halfway. Nia closed her eyes when he enveloped her.

“Are you okay?” he asked.

She was now. It felt good to lean on someone. She’d never had that before. But she shouldn’t get too used to it.

Don’t get attached.
