Cullen leaned an elbow on the bar and changed his accent to match Tamlyn’s. “A room, if you have it.”

“Only one left,” the man said. “Just you?”

Cullen glanced to the back where Tamlyn sat. “Me and my wife.” The instant the words were out, they sounded right.

The man smiled and held out his hand. “I’m Tully. I own the tavern.”

Cullen shook with him. “Nice to meet you. I’m Cullen.”

“We have excellent food. My daughter has a gift. My wife makes all the desserts, which go fast.”

“Thanks for the notice. I’m sure we’ll partake.”

Cullen joined Tamlyn at the table with two tankards of ale. He set one in front of her before lowering himself into the seat.

“How did you pay? I have the coins,” she said and jiggled the pouch at her waist.

He flashed her a smile and kept his voice low so no one would hear his brogue. “Think how you got those.”

“You’re impossible,” she said with a laugh.

He lifted his tankard to her. “But fun.”

She shook her head before taking a small drink.

“We have a room,” Cullen told her.

Tamlyn looked around the tavern. “Do you want to stay here?”

“For a bit. I’m sure we can pick up some things if we listen hard enough. But later, I’d like to see more of the city. We’ll finish our drinks before we go to our room.”

“Our?” she replied softly.

He met her gaze. “There’s no way I’m allowing you to stay in a room by yourself here. Besides, there was only one left.”

“I didn’t want that anyway,” she retorted and shot him a sly look.

Cullen shifted in his chair. He could hardly wait until tonight. If she kept looking at him like that, he’d take her upstairs right now.
