Tamlyn could see Sian agreed with her. She held Jenefer’s gaze. “You can’t deny I’m right. His arrival might be exactly what is needed to band everyone who has magic together. There’s no reason we can’t have our own cities and live in peace.”

“I thought there was a city like that already,” Cullen said.

Jenefer irritably said, “Highvale, but not everyone makes it there.”

“Those with and without magic should be able to live together,” Sian said.

Tamlyn snorted. “That’s wishful thinking. At the very least, when children are discovered to have magic, someone at Highvale should be notified so the child can be brought there and not subjected to slavery, banishment, or death.”

“What you’re suggesting would bring on war,” Jenefer said. “The instant the others think we might rise against them, they’ll come after us.”

Cullen snorted as he crossed his arms over his chest. “Let them, if they’re that stupid. They come with weapons, but you all have magic.”

“Not everyone with magic can defend themselves,” Sian replied. “I have knowledge of science and how to use chemicals and metals to create things, but many consider that magic. While Jenefer has trained us so we have some fighting skills, neither of us has magic for defense.”

Not for the first time, Tamlyn wished she had some kind of magic. Something that would be more useful in keeping her and others safe from harm. She looked at Cullen to find his eyes on her. His face didn’t give away his thoughts, much as she wished otherwise. Was he wondering if he’d made a mistake? She hoped not. Because she was really glad that he was here.

That certainly wasn’t something she’d ever thought to think about a Dragon King. It was odd, but the fear that had nearly choked her when she first discovered who he was had begun to diminish.
