Shock went through her. “Here? As in…here?”

“Aye.” He didn’t bother to hide his grin.

“I…uh…I’m not sure about that.”

Cullen slowly looked around. “It seems this place is big enough. You’ll never know I’m here.”

She almost snorted. As if she could ever forget. She hadn’t stopped thinking about him since that morning. And he’d left. How much worse would it be with him around?

“The sooner we get started, the better prepared we’ll be,” he said.

Tamlyn absently nodded, trying to come up with how to explain to Jenefer about their new guest.

“Do you hear the screams every night?”

She blinked and looked at him. “What? Uh…no. I don’t know when they’ll come.”

“Is there any way we can find out who the children are before they’re reported by the family? That way, we can get to them before they’re handed over to the authorities.”

“If there was, we would’ve done that years ago.”

He crossed his arms over his chest. “How long have you been doing this?”

“Too long,” she said softly.

“Your world and mine are verra different. It’s separate for a good reason, but that doesna mean we are no’ outraged at the thought of children sacrificed simply because they have magic.”

She studied him for a long moment. “You know why our two worlds are separate?”

“I do.”

No one had ever been able to give her an answer. The idea that she might uncover the big secret was too much to resist. “Will you tell me?”

He let out a long sigh. “Aye. First, tell me everything I need to do.”

“Where do you want to start?”

“Stonemore. Lay out the city, tell me about the occupants, and describe anything I need to look for.”

She chuckled. “You make it sound as if you’ll go there during the day.”

“Because I will.”

“You can’t,” she said in astonishment.

He smiled. “Watch me.”
