“I don’t know about that. Everything was taken from me that night.”

“Was it? Think about it, Nell. You may have been hurt and angry—no one would blame you for that—but you found a new purpose. You took your life back.”

“And now that purpose is gone, and I don’t know who I am any longer.”

“Humans are a fascinating species.”

I laughed. “You make us sound like aliens.” I began walking to my room. When the others were released, I didn’t want to be around.

Following me, Dom’s arm brushed my own, making it tingle. “In some ways, maybe we are. But we grow and adapt. The person we are today is not who we will be in ten years. I think it’s time you rediscovered yourself and found something else to do as a hobby. You apparently suck at revenge.”

“I don’t know. Felt pretty good to shoot her.”

“How many times have I told you to aim to kill?”

I grimaced. “I couldn’t do it with everyone looking at me. I figured maiming her would be the next best thing.”

He nudged me. “And that is exactly why I think the girl I’ve known for years is still in there.”

“Is that how you see me? As the girl you helped?”

“If that’s all I saw now, I wouldn’t be here.”

“What do you see?”

Stopping, Dom looked down at me and then kissed my cheek. “When you find yourself, come and find me. The greatest revenge you can have is being happy.” He began walking in the direction we came, leaving me standing there, wondering what he didn’t say.

On a boat in the ocean stood a girl. She’d found life was not perfect, prince charming didn’t really exist, and revenge did not make her feel whole and alive. She second-guessed herself and had to force herself to play the part. But in the end, someone was there to rescue her.
