Of course, the news of the third serial killer’s capture was on every channel. As was Amber’s involvement.
There was a group of television vans parked in front of the rental. Thankfully, his mother had had the forethought to cancel the next reservations so that Amber didn’t have to deal with work. Nor did guests have to deal with the crazy media camping out on the street and shouting questions at them as they tried to vacation.
It was just past supper time when there was a knock on the front door. His father had stationed two officers on the street, so he immediately knew whoever it was had passed security scrutiny.
Walking over, he opened the door to a couple roughly his parents’ age.
“Hi,” the man said and glanced at him. “Are you Brock Miller?”
“Yes,” Brock answered and before they even said anything else, he knew who they were. Amber was a spitting image of the woman standing in front of him.
“We’re Patrick and Julia Oswald.” The man held out his hand for Brock.
Brock felt his heart skip. “Of course.” He motioned for them to come in.
“Amber?” Julia called out and rushed forward.
“Mom?” Amber cried out when she saw the woman. Setting Emma down, she rushed across the room and held onto the woman as they both cried.
“I guess this confirms it,” Patrick said beside him. “We had our doubts.” He shook his head. “Damned if she doesn’t look exactly like Jade.” He glanced over at him.
“Except the hair,” Brock added and Patrick laughed.
“Dad?” Amber held out a hand and Brock watched the man step forward and engulf the two women.
Brock walked over and lifted Emma into his arms easily.
“Who?” Emma asked softly.
“I hear I have a grandchild,” Julia said suddenly as she stepped back when she heard Emma talk. Then she walked over and took Emma’s hand in hers. “I’m your grandmother,” Julia added as she wiped her tears away with her free hand.
“I have two grandmothers?” Emma asked him excitedly.
“And two grandfathers,” Patrick added as he held onto Amber and looked at Emma.
“These are my parents,” Brock said, shifting Emma into Julia’s waiting arms. “Reggie and Kimberly Miller.” He motioned to his parents who had been sitting on the sofa, watching, and now stood up to shake hands with the other couple.
After a brief greeting, they all sat around and filled her parents in as best as they could.
“What’s my name?” Amber asked suddenly. “My full name?”
Her mother smiled at her. “Amber Emma Oswald,” her mother answered, nodding to Emma. “You must have clung on to something from your past.”
“I… remembered Jade too,” she said. “I always believed she was made up.”
“She can’t wait to see you. Unfortunately, she had some… business before she could come up here.” Her mother glanced at her father.
“We were going to head down there and see her,” Amber said, taking Brock’s hand in hers. “We could use the vacation.”
“After we heal and let things settle down,” Brock added.
“Where are you staying?” his mother asked suddenly.
“We normally have a steady rental here in the Keys, but it was completely booked up,” Julia answered.
His mother smiled and winked at Amber.
“We’ve got a perfect place for you.” She nodded towards the glass doors. “And I hear that the manager of the property is soon to be my daughter-in-law.”
Brock watched happiness cross the couple’s faces. They moved in for another hug, when Patrick’s phone rang. The man, smiling, answered the call. Instantly, his smile disappeared as he listened. Then worry flashed in his eyes.
“I understand. We’re on our way.” He said, glancing around the room as if trying to gather his thoughts.
“What is it?” When he hung up, Julia asked.
“Jade’s missing.” Patrick said, taking his wife’s hand. “Wyatt thinks she’s been kidnapped.”
“Let’s go.” Amber said, taking Emma back into her arms and looking at him. “My sister needs me.”
He nodded. “Let’s go to the Bahamas.”
