“What happened?” she asked as they reached his building.
“I gave up and learned to embrace my name,” he answered. “I know it’s not the same, but it may take some time for you to lose Crissy Talbot.” He leaned in and kissed her just outside his door.
“Thanks,” she said and smiled up at him. “Legally, I suppose I am both. Right? I mean, I do have a birth certificate with Crissy Jones, then a marriage license with Talbot.”
“Yeah, we’ll have to figure that one out later.” He shut the door behind him. “For now, you look like you’re about to fall over. How about a nap?”
“A nap sounds wonderful,” she said with a sigh. “After I make a call.”
Brock nodded. “Okay, let’s do this together.”
CHAPTER SIXTEEN
Brock watched Crissy… Amber, struggle with dialing the phone number on his cell phone. She wiped her palms on her shorts several times before finally hitting the button.
They were sitting in his living room on his sofa, and he couldn’t help but feeling as if the place no longer felt like home. It was dark and empty and more than anything he wanted to be back at the pool house with Emma and Amber, enjoying an evening swim.
She’d put the call on speaker, and he heard the phone ring twice before someone finally answered the call.
“Hello?” The woman’s voice sounded soft. Too soft to make out much. But one thing was clear—the voice was almost identical to Crissy’s. Amber’s, he corrected in his head again.
“Hello, my name is Crissy…” She shook her head and took a deep breath. “Am I speaking with Jade Oswald?”
“Yes, this is Jade.”
Brock took Amber’s hand in his and squeezed it lightly.
“I… I’m sorry to bother you but… This may sound strange, but… I think I’m your twin.” Amber looked over at him, and he nodded his encouragement.
The phone was silent for a moment, and he could see the worry in Amber’s eyes. “Hello? Are you still there?” she asked.
“Yes, I’m here,” Jade said softly. “Do you have a video app?”
“Yes, I…” Amber held the phone out and motioned to him to help her. “Brock, how do you connect a video call?”
Brock reached over and hit the button on the phone that would connect the video call for her.
The phone made a ringing sound and then was answered immediately.
On the screen popped up an image of a blond woman standing on a balcony with the blue ocean behind her.
It could have been Crissy—Amber—in a blond wig, and he sucked in his breath.
He felt Amber shake beside him and wrapped an arm around her shoulders.
They watched Jade’s eyes pool up. “Amber?” she said just as a blond-haired, bare-chested man rushed to Jade’s side and wrapped his arms around, her much like Brock was doing to Amber. “My god. It’s really you,” Jade cried out.
“Yes,” Amber said with a nervous giggle. “I…”
“Where are you?” Jade asked quickly.
“Florida. Miami tonight. But I’m in Key West,” Amber answered.
“Key West. So close.” Jade sighed. “What… what happened? Where have you been?” Jade asked.
“That’s a very long story.” Amber sighed. “You’re in the Bahamas?”
“Yes, my parents…” Jade smiled. “Our parents own a resort down here. We moved here a few years after you went missing. They thought it would be safer.”
