“Why?” she asked again.

He smiled and Crissy’s heart skipped a beat. Damn, the man was sexy when he smiled. “Because I’m going to be staying here for a while,” he answered her daughter.

“Why?” Emma asked again.

Here, she saw him pause. She could tell that he was stuck with trying to figure out what to tell the little girl.

“To help your mama out for a while,” he finally answered after setting a plate of toast and eggs in front of Emma.

Good answer, Crissy thought.

“Doing what?” Emma asked, picking up her fork. “Mama usually cuts my toast,” her daughter said with a slight pout, setting the fork back down.

“Okay.” Brock easily picked up the fork and cut the toast into smaller pieces. “Better?” he asked, holding out the fork.

“Why does my mama need help?” Emma asked after taking the first bite.

Just then, Crissy decided it was time to step inside. She’d forgotten to set the laundry basket in the laundry room and instead set it down on the table.

“Because there are some things even your mama can’t do on her own,” she answered Emma easily as her eyes met Brock’s.

“Why?” Emma asked between bites.

“Enough whys. Eat your breakfast so you can go play with Tilly.” Crissy smiled. “She’ll why you to death,” she told him with a slight roll of her eyes.

“My nieces are the same way.” Brock handed her a plate of toast and eggs. She spun the plate around as if inspecting the food. “Approve?” he asked.

She shrugged. “I saw Oliver do that at his restaurant once. I have no clue why, but yes, it looks delicious.”

“Who’s Oliver?” He gave her a sideways glance.

“Tilly’s daddy,” Emma chimed in.

“Right.” He nodded and smiled.

“They live next door,” Crissy supplied as she took her first bite of the food. “Not bad,” she admitted, waving her fork.

“I like it, Mama,” Emma said, nudging her with her elbow.

“It’s good. Maybe we will have Brock cook breakfast for us all the time?” Crissy suggested to Emma.

“Yeah!” Emma cheered.

Brock laughed as he sat down next to Crissy with his own plate of food.

“So, what’s the plan for the day?” he asked her.

“Well, Emma will head off to Tilly’s after breakfast, until around eleven, so I can get the rental ready for the new guests, who will arrive around ten. Then its lunchtime, followed by a nap,” Crissy said.

“I like naps,” he broke into her thoughts.

Crissy giggled, and Emma frowned and said, “I don’t.”

“But we take them, just the same,” Crissy added. “Then we have playtime followed by reading time, and then chores. Then we make dinner and have more story time. We usually sneak in a swim after dinner. If we can.”

“Sounds like a busy day,” he commented.

“What are you doing?” Emma asked him.
