“I’ll get us a couple of drinks,” I said.

She went toward the ladies all hanging together in a group. I headed for the bar. On my way, I was pushed by some rather erratic dancers. “Sorry,” a woman said.

“No problem,” I said and reached out to help her get her footing. She’d had more than enough to drink. She was stumbling and barely staying upright. “Can I help you sit down?” I grabbed her elbow when she stumbled again. “Woah.”

“Hey!” A tall, blonde dude with what sounded like a British accent pushed me. “Don’t touch my girlfriend.”

“Your girlfriend is stumbling,” I said. “She’s had too much to drink.”

“Fuck you,” he said and pushed me again. “Don’t touch her.”

The woman stumbled into her boyfriend. “Peter, stop,” she slurred.

“You should take her somewhere to sit down,” I said. “Before she falls down.”

“You should mind your own damn business,” he snapped.

It was pretty clear he was drunk. “Look, I’m just going to get a drink,” I said. “You two do whatever you want.”

I turned and tried to walk away. The man pushed me once again. I stumbled forward. I started out drunk, but I was quickly sobering up. I took a deep breath and slowly turned. “I’m not trying to get into anything with you,” I said. “But you keep pushing me and we’re going to have a problem. Let’s just walk away. Enjoy the rest of your night with your lady.”

“Don’t try and tell me what to do,” he growled. “You Americans all think you own everything.”

I scoffed. “Yeah, that’s what’s happening here. I’m getting a drink. Fight the chair if you want.”

I turned and tried to walk away once again, and the asshole just jumped out in front of me. This time he pushed my chest. The guy wasn’t going to let it go. He was going to keep pushing until I hit him. He was drunk. He was an easy target. I knew my size alone gave me an advantage. Add in the fact I could stand up, and it was no contest. I did not want to ruin my night or my stay here by landing myself in jail.

“You don’t get to touch my girlfriend and walk away,” the guy growled.

“Yes, I do,” I said with a shrug. “And if you want to get technical, it’s your girlfriend who touched me. Go home. Sleep it off.”

“What’s going on?” Derrick sauntered toward me.

I shook my head. This was the last thing I needed. This was quickly becoming one of those situations that was going to end really badly. Like really, really badly. Derrick would pull in the rest of the guys. It would end up being an all-out brawl. That would get us kicked off the island for sure.

“Why don’t we all get a drink?” I suggested.

“Fuck you, asshole,” my new friend growled.

“What’d you say?” Derrick stepped forward and got in the guy’s face.

“Hey,” I said. “Let’s get a drink.”

They weren’t listening to me. We had hit the point of no return. I wasn’t going to get involved. Derrick was used to this kind of thing. I wasn’t. I didn’t get into bar fights.

“This guy wants to start shit,” Derrick said. “I’m ready to finish it.”

“You guys are going to ruin our night,” I said. “Let’s go, Derrick.”

The girlfriend stepped forward and grabbed her boyfriend. “I don’t feel good,” she complained.

“You should get her out of here,” I said. I felt bad for the woman. He was an asshole for letting her get this drunk.

“Fuck you,” he snapped.

There was a standoff, but thankfully, Derrick followed me as I walked away from the drunk couple. Claire looked like she was enjoying herself. I hated to ruin her night, but it was this or me getting handcuffed and dragged out. I looked behind me to see if the guy was coming my way. He was trying. The girlfriend was working hard to keep him from coming after me.

“Claire, we need to go,” I said.
