The guy laughed. “No. Everyone is holing up until the storm passes.”
“How long has it been storming here?” I asked.
The guy shrugged. “Blew in a couple of hours ago. Wasn’t supposed to hit us. It came out of nowhere. Happens sometimes.”
“Is this considered a bad one?” I asked.
“Not bad,” he said. “It’ll pass soon.”
“I need to get to the resort,” I said again. I pulled out my phone to call Claire and let her know I was back.
“Nope,” the guy said.
“Nope?” I repeated.
“Cell service got knocked out about thirty minutes ago,” he said.
“Shit. I need to check in. Can I use your phone?”
“Are you Ryan Jones?” he asked.
“Yes.”
“I’ll call and let them know you’re back,” he said. “I’ll have to see if there’s someone here that can drive you back.”
“Thanks. I would appreciate that. I’m going to step into the bathroom and clean up.”
I headed into the bathroom. I took one look in the mirror and grimaced. “Damn.” I turned my head to the side. The branch had cut my cheek. It didn’t look deep, but it was bleeding. I turned on the water to wash my face when there was a loud bang followed by everything going dark. I waited to see if the lights would come back on. When they didn’t, I shut off the water and used a few paper towels to dry my face and hands.
This was just getting better and better. I opened the door and was glad to see there was a security light illuminating the desk area. “Can I use that phone to call my fiancée?” I asked.
He shook his head. “It’s out.”
“Are you fucking kidding me?” I groaned. “I need to let my fiancée know I’m back on the island.”
“I was talking to your friend Tony when the line went dead,” he said.
“My friend Tony?” I almost laughed at the idea. Tony and I were not friends. I couldn’t imagine him claiming we were.
“Yeah, some dude has called here a couple times asking if your plane landed. He wanted me to call him when you landed.”
“No kidding?” I couldn’t imagine Tony giving two shits. “Did Claire call?”
“Just this Tony guy.”
That surprised me, but I assumed it was for Claire’s sake. No one else knew I was flying anywhere for the day. “I need to make sure they got my plane in the hangar.”
“Be careful out there,” he called out.
The wind was still whipping around. It was dark as shit, but I knew the general layout of the airport. Once again, my bare skin was battered with branches and even loose gravel blowing around. I made it to the hangar to find my baby all tucked in for the night. That was a relief. I thanked the crew and walked back to the office. Now, I needed to find a way to the resort. This was one of the good things about being wealthy. I could pay someone a lot of money to get me there.
