And suddenly, that is enough.

At her words, I empty into her one last time.

And I am complete.

Everything calms, and the secret beast inside of me retreats. I return to Vengeance, same as I was before. But forever changed because now we are truly mated.

I collapse onto the bed, letting myself rest beside her without fear for the first time.

And I watch in happy exhaustion as Hyena reclaims her as sweetly as I did not.

“Of course, we forgive you. Come here, baby.” He carefully puts her underneath him and gently pumps into her heavily seeded pussy while congratulating her on making me lose my mind.

“Let me tell you, I ain’t never seen him like that before,” he informs her. “Baby, you are some kind of masterpiece….”

He’s right. She’s beatific right now. Her eyes are beautifully glazed over like she’s in a sex trance. And her climax with him isn’t like the ones with me. It’s a gasp of breath, and eyes flared wide as if she can’t believe she caught the game-winning ball. Then it’s a sigh of relief and a sweet, grateful smile as Hyena tells her how fucking perfect she is.

Like over two years haven’t passed. Like we never left that cabin in Nebraska.

But after he rolls off her, he tells her frankly. “I’m going to have to call dibs on the third kid, though, because I’m pretty sure V just put a baby in you.”

We all laugh, and Des-E leaves her to sleep, assuring us he can wait until morning for his turn to reclaim her.

I begin to muster the energy to leave too. But before I can raise up, she curls her soft body over mine.

“Could you stay? Both of you?” she asks sleepily. “I’m tired of waking up alone.”

Us too.

And as I fall asleep, I have a new feeling about the future. Allie’s bad habit of never asking her men for anything?

That’s done.

Des-E returns later that evening to pull her out of the bed and tend to her.

Based on the fast splashing sounds we hear in the bathroom a few minutes later, “tending to her” involves making our surely sore woman come in a warm bath instead of on a mattress like us.

Both Hyena and I rise from the bed in silent agreement to go watch.

We find Des-E not just bathing her but fully in the tub with her. He’s holding her and kissing her as she comes down from her orgasm, and he’s speaking in passionate Spanish like he always does after they both come. He’s telling her how much we love her, that she completes us, that she’s our three beating hearts.

If she ever learns the language, she’s going to be shocked by how romantic the quietest member of Vengeance is.

But maybe she already knows.

A memory washes over me.

Me and Allie on the bed, planning her next study session between kisses.

“You know what you three remind me off? The tin man, the lion, and the scarecrow. They all went with Dorothy because they thought they needed something they didn’t have. But really, what they needed was each other. Because together, they had everything each of them wanted. You’re the brains. Hyena’s the bravery. And Des-E’s the heart.”

I opened my mouth to ask if that made her Dorothy—the character who finally gives them a purpose. But then I closed it when I realized that Dorothy left them behind and never came back. At least in the original movie version, where it was all a dream.

But that was Dorothy.

Allie has come back to us. And she’s here to stay.

No, I’m not the heart of the group. But mine swells in my chest as I silently agree with everything Des-E is telling her.

And maybe Allie understands what he’s saying too. She rests her head on his shoulder and softly declares, “I really, really like this new plan.”

Then she jolts with surprise when we all laugh, including the two men she didn’t hear coming into the room earlier.

“Okay, we need to stop this and go get our kid,” I inform all of them.

Des-E nods in agreement, lifts Allie off him, and gets serious about actually giving her a bath.

“By the way,” he says as he grabs a hand towel, “how did you figure out that my government name is Bernardo?”

Allie stills in the bath. “Wait, Bernardo is your real name?”

We all stare at her, wide-eyed.

“You didn’t know?” Hyena asks.

“No! I named him after my best friend, Bernice, and added the o as a nod to his Latin heritage,” she answers.

We all stand there in disbelief. Until Hyena says, “Well, we’re going to rewrite that origin story and just tell ourselves you somehow knew.”

“I did not,” she insists with a laugh. “But Bernardo isn’t a terrible name,” she insists, craning her neck to look at all of us. “I love it. And wait, since I know yours now, can I know the other two? Do they all start with a B? Why are you looking at me like that?”
