“And this.” He pushed harder. “You couldn’t wait to have it. You came all the way here for it. Say it.”

I kept my cheek to the mattress.

“Look at me and say it, Mia.” His tone had changed to something more serious, more demanding.

No. Not this time. I wouldn’t submit so easily to him tonight—I wanted him, but I wanted a fight too. I wanted it rough and angry, because that’s the way I felt. I wanted him to work for it. I wanted to hurt him in some way, retaliate for the pain he’d caused me.

And I wanted him to think, Maybe I don’t know her.

I looked him right in the eye. “Fuck you.”

He released my wrists and stood up, backing away from me. Had I gone too far?

For a moment, he remained perfectly still. As if he were waiting for me to get up and leave.

I propped myself up on my elbows. My heart was pounding.

He unbuttoned his coat.

Yes yes yes. I opened my knees a little wider.

He reached for his tie, and as his fingers worked the knot free, my toes curled.

And then he smiled at me. He fucking smiled at me, like this was all a little game.

Enraged, I turned onto my stomach and tried to crawl away from him, but his hand shot out and clamped around my right ankle.

“Let me go.” I clawed at the comforter as he dragged me back to him.

“No.” His other hand reached under my left hip and flipped me onto my back again. “I won’t. Not ever.” He pulled my jeans off, then let go of me just long enough to shrug off his coat. I took the opportunity to scramble backward, tumbling off the far side of the bed. After landing on my ass, I popped to my feet, even more furious.

“See? This is the fucking problem with you,” I snapped, pointing at him. “You say things like that—not ever—and you don’t mean them.”

He undid the top two buttons of his shirt. “I do mean them.”

I shook my head. “No, you don’t. You don’t want any kind of ever with me. You just want now.”

Pulling the tie from around his neck, he moved around the foot of the bed. “Now is looking pretty good to me, not gonna lie. You’re killing me in that lace.”

I backed up. “I’m not joking, Lucas.”

“Neither am I.” He moved closer to me. “I get hard for you every single day we’re apart, and yet somehow it still surprises me when I see you again, how fucking beautiful you are.”

Dashing sideways, I jumped up on the bed. “Stop it!” Fuck, did he have to be so hot? So good with words? I put my hands out. “I’m really mad at you!”

He smiled, slow and sexy. “I can tell.”

“We need to talk.”

“Right now?” He slid the tie through his fingers. “I’ve got a better idea.”

Flustered, I struggled for words. “I—you can’t just—we have to—you’re distracting me with that tie!”

He snapped the tie taut in front of him. “This tie right here?”

“Yes.” Parking my hands on my hips, I eyed him suspiciously. “Just what are you planning to do with it?”

“Come down here and I’ll show you.”
