Then it hit me. There were other cabins here. Other places we could stay. I knew where the keys to these cabins were at. It would be easier just to sleep in one of those for the night, rather than stay here and put up with his shit for a moment longer.
“Come on,” I said, walking past the men into the living room.
“Where are you going, Elise?” Brad sneered.
“Away from you,” I said.
He laughed, wiping the blood from his face. I knew that Trevor had gone easy on him. Had he really wanted to hurt him, he could have. He could have broken the guy’s nose, or worse. Brad was lucky Trevor held himself back – and frankly, I was surprised that he had.
“You have nowhere to go,” he slurred.
“Maybe not. Maybe we’ll end up stranded in the snow, but it sure as hell beats spending another second with you,” I said, my voice trembling as I spoke. “Grab your things, guys. Let’s go.”
I expected them to argue, to ask what I had in mind. I didn’t want to stay it out loud. I didn’t want Brad to know my plan. That would only lead to more chaos, and potentially, more violence. We were technically breaking into one of his family’s other cabins, and I wasn’t sure how he’d feel about that. It would only be for a night though. Technically, only for a few hours, or so I thought. I figured we’d wait until the sun came up and hopefully, the storm would have blown itself out by then, allowing us to get the hell out of there.
If only it had been that easy.

“This should be the right key,” Elise said, handing over a key ring.
Her hands shook from the freezing temps, and I was in a hurry to get us all inside, away from the blowing snow and frigid winds. The snow storm wasn’t letting up, which made me fear leaving even after the sun came up, but I kept that thought to myself.
I wiggled the key into the lock, and the door opened with ease. It was almost too easy, honestly. Breaking and entering should have been more difficult than this. Elise had snagged the key ring from the drawer in the main cabin before we left, and we picked the cabin farthest from Brad’s. We’d hoped he wouldn’t know we were there. Hoped, he’d been so drunk, he’d simply passed out, and was none the wiser.
If he had figured out what we were up to, well, I guess he could call the cops, but none of us were too worried about that. All we cared about was keeping Elise safe and warm. Getting her inside this cabin, and out of the storm, was priority number one. Now, with that accomplished, we’d figure out how to get the fire going in the fireplace, get a few more hours of sleep, and then formulate a plan of some kind.
Elise flipped on a light switch, and the first thing I noticed was this cabin was a lot smaller than the other one. It had a loft upstairs, a small living room with one sofa, and a kitchen area. Unlike the other cabin though, this one had no hallway with extra guest rooms in the back or anything like that. It would be a tight fit, but we’d make it work.
“The bed is a king,” Elise said, as if reading my mind. She didn’t look at anyone as she spoke, “So a few of us can share it, most likely. The couch pulls out into a full-sized bed, I believe. That’s room for a couple more.”
“It’ll work,” I said, scratching the stubble growing on my chin. I needed to shave “We’ll make it work.”
Trevor and Sean were already crowded around the fireplace, trying to get it going.
“I have a feeling we won’t be going anywhere today though,” Chase said, speaking low enough so only I could hear him.
“Yeah, me either,” I said. “Driving out here was bad enough – and that was before the main storm him. With the way it’s still coming down out there, it’s only going to be worse.”
Sean looked up from the fireplace, and judging by the look on his face, I could tell her knew our fate as well. All of us looked glum, even Elise. She was a smart girl, she had to have known the roads would be too bad to go anywhere anytime soon.
I glanced over at her. God, she was just so tiny, and so fragile looking. The way her sweatshirt hung down to her knees only made her look even smaller. The first time I met her, she was just a kid. Now, with her long blonde hair and bright blue eyes, she was most definitely all grown up, and all woman.
